Buttercup Ridge ’17
Warm weather and rain have finally melted much of the snow at the valley level in this area and at long last I was able to visit a place, which for some reason hosts the first Spring bloom of buttercups in this whole region. A week ago there was a foot of snow on the ground up there, but today hundreds of buttercups were in full bloom on the tiny top of “Buttercup Ridge”.

Such a brilliant yellow! How nice to see these flowers every spring, just when we’re desperate for colour.

I can understand that. It’s like when the sun comes out on the west coast.

I was looking at our buttercups last weekend, and thinking of you. I’m so glad that they’ve made their annual appearance. It was a long wait, but sometimes when seasons change, they do it quickly. I especially like the last two photos. The group of three, all at a different stage of bloom, is really nice, and that shy little bud is delightful!

It was so good to see those little flowers after the long, cold and snowy winter this year! An amazing boost to my attitude!

Isn’t that just the truth? Even here, where we tend more toward brown and drab rather than cold and snowy, it’s a great joy to see the new color.

After all of the snow we’ve had it’s a pleasure just to see bare ground, and the flowers were a real plus!

oh my goodness, flower season has begun! So pretty.
I sink to my knees and above in snow still! My ponds are overflowing their banks……. not flowers yet. So good to see yours.

For some reason that I don’t understand, the buttercups bloom much earlier in that one little spot than anywhere else around here. Nearly all of the snow has melted here at the valley level where it gets some sun, but the shaded places are still loaded and there is plenty higher up. There is a small canyon just to the west of my house and it has had a nice stream from snow melt running for over a week now. I wish it would be there all year!

Our snow is melting too but it’ll be a while yet before we see buttercups! It was great to see these; I’m glad spring is happening.

It suddenly turned warmer here, the snow started to melt and things started to grow. Amazing how quickly that can happen.

…and what a wonderful sight it must be too, Terry.
Nothing beats the shiny gold petals reflecting the light.
Sometimes I think the changing of the seasons is better than the season in full flower. It reminds us of the impermanence of life and how lucky we are to be able to see such a beautiful array of Mother Nature’s gifts. I’m so glad I live life in the slow lane now. I have a far better appreciation of it all.

I also like the change time of the seasons and especially I like to see the new world emerge from the cold and gray of winter. I will enjoy this to the fullest!

Oh, I love their little happy spring faces! Did you hold one under your chin like we used to do as kids? If your chin looks yellow, then you love butter. 😉

I remember doing that when I was a kid too, but we did it with Dandelions. Yesterday I noticed a few Buttercups blooming in the valley too. Many other species will soon be joining them although today we are getting heavy rain.

Thank you Candace! It looks as though it will be a slow start this year. It’s still cold and rainy. But the flowers will be greatly appreciated when they bloom!

Wonderful! Always a delight to see. Celandines are opening here, trusting the weather as always.

More flowers would like to open if we had a little more sun. It is still cool and rainy. In a few weeks there should be an explosion of flowers!

Beautiful – again. They can be found here also. Last weekend we moved back to Helsinki from Oulu. Winter continues in Oulu, but in Helsinki, it is real spring.

There are signs, so it won’t be long now. Bluebirds are here now too. This morning though it was only 24º.

That’s typical of weather in NH. Today it’s almost 70 but we may need a fire tonight. You never know! 😁

The emergence of wildflowers is spring for me too! Most of our spring flowers are very late this year.

Thanks for the great photos of one of my favorite wildflowers. Our buttercups were just beginning to open last weekend, and my photos didn’t turn out. Seeing yours, I can now add a drawing of the barely open flower to my nature journal page.

I’m pleased that you enjoyed the buttercups Amy. They have been late arriving this year here because at their usual time there was over two feet of snow on the ground. They are blooming in profusion now though.
