Despite low clouds and a constant drizzle today, my son and I spent the morning in the Cabinets just below the snow line. Even under the dull gray skies the golden needles of the western larch stood out against the green of the firs, pines, hemlocks and cedars.
A few days ago it looked as though winter was on our doorstep. Now the forecasts have changed and despite fairly heavy snow at the higher elevations, Autumn has stayed for awhile in the valleys of western Montana.
Colder temperatures have finally reached the valleys in western Montana and with them have come more autumn colors. I don’t think it has peaked yet, but it’s pretty none the less.

Autumn along a creek
Autumn along the Clark Fork river. The gold on the mountainsides is from the Larch, and behind and above them is a snow storm blowing in; so typical of our fall weather.
