This was the last of a weather front that has been here for several days and we did get some rain from it. We are still far below our yearly average though. We get only about 15 inches a year here and we are nearly 4 inches short this year so far.
Showy and dramatic sunsets have their place, but I do love nights that come with these bits of color in the clouds. Are falling nights like this mostly silent, or do you, also, have certain birds and insects that begin to make their presence known once the sun is down?
Usually it’s very quiet except for coyotes and an occasional owl, but this time of year our nights are very noisy with all of the frogs and insects that are at the crescendo of their annual cycle, hurrying to get everything done before winter. I really enjoy the sounds. I spent last night on a ridge at 6000 feet and as the last of the light faded the elk were bugling down below me. And this morning on the trail about an hour after daybreak I got to listen to the howls of a wolf pack not far away. That was a treat!
I too treasure getting away out in the wilderness, which is not often done … large parks do it for me as well … feeding squirrels! I love the tone of the evening in this photo, by the water!
WOW!!
