Montana Outdoors
I don´t think the light is wrong, it helps create a mirror image of the plants ( is rush the word?) which makes a total “background” for your subject, the little ducklings. It is a very sweet photo. We too have many kind of ducklings right now, especially in the moor close to my home. And goslings, strongly protected by their parents, many runners have learned about this. 🙂

I love the reflections and the family highlighted in the center. There is something about each new season of goslings that bring out the “awww” factor. And the “awe” factor, too!

The reflections attracted me, but I thought the family didn’t show up as well as I would have liked. Perhaps it is their camo.

I rarely get to see that here. We have plenty of geese but they are considered a scourge.
My town goes around to all the rivers in spring and waxes the eggs so they don’t hatch. Cruel, I know, but they are prolific and very messy!

We are very rural here and folks just put up with the mess; same with the wild turkeys, which are even messier.

Definitely a springtime photo. I love how protective geese are of their young. Both parents are always on duty. It’s nice to see. Love the lily pads. My water lily just started to bloom in my little pond on my patio.

The growth of those lily pads just exploded within the last week, after we had a little sun. I admire the goose families. They form very close bonds with their mates and it carries over to their whole families.

These are the first that I’ve seen, but there will be hundreds more along that wetland. THey are pretty easy to see in the hayfields along the water, but one can’t always catch them afloat.

I really don’t know much about lighting or photography in general, but, AWWW, that’s is just sooo sweeeet… I love it! Just look at all those teeny tiny babies! =)

Hi Montucky, Wonderful in spades! We are still expecting our Canadian Goslings here but mama is sitting on her nest next door just at the shoreline. It won’t be long. Glad you have the new babies! Have a fine day today!

It is a wonderful shot. I know what you mean about the light, but the reflection makes up for it. I hope Mama got that last duckling scooted up around her. What a mother’s day shot!

What a sweet family. I like the lighting but then I’m partial to contrast; you have to look a little harder to see them and then they’re beautiful.

I’m hoping to see a family soon on the pond next to us. A goose has been sitting on her nest for the past several weeks. What a cute little family!

I’m sure these are just the first to hatch here. There are hundreds of geese nesting no on all of the ponds and marshes and the river. It should be a good year for the geese!

I know the light problem very well, but one has to take photos if something happens. I think that Your photo is success.

It is tough when the family refuses to cooperate with the photographer. However. the background and foreground is top notch. Must have been hard to paint that on muslin fabric. 😉

I have a similar picture of a goose family taken last spring at this time. After seeing your picture, I had to go looking … I could not find a goose anywhere and they are usually everywhere.
Maybe our cold weather made them go else where this year … or they are just late.
You have proven that everything does not have to be perfect to get a great shot.

I’d guess they are late. Ours were too. I haven’t seen any other babies so I think this pair was early. Hard to tell though: this year has been extremely unusual in every respect.

The light may not have been right for getting the geese (especially their dark feathers) perfectly exposed… but the image is absolutely lovely anyway! Gorgeous reflections and I quite like the light as is!

When I read the heading, I opened the page expecting to see a family of foxes, or maybe skunks. I do like you picture, you are too harsh a critic on yourself. (Most of us would kill to be able to take photos like your “rejects”!)
BTW, did you see the photo spread in Sunday’s Missoulian (May 22) of the fox family living in a neighborhood west of Missoula?

I did see that! They can sometimes do well in urban areas. Remember the fox on the golf course a year or so ago? There was a den for several years about a half mile up the river from my house but they have gone: I’m afraid the highway was their demise.

I have a friend who lives by the Canyon River golf course and last time I asked, the ball-stealing fox was still a fixture, and teaching her kits to retrieve gold balls as well!
