Suddenly, a few days ago, this little flower appeared in a sadly neglected flower bed. I had never seen one here before, and so it’s a first… and certainly the last… blossom of our long hot summer.
Hello Montucky! How beautiful the last flowers! Actually, I’m surprised to see a flower still growing in Montana…in October. I guess it isn’t too cold there yet? I was just down in Texas and it was in the 90s.
These were a complete surprise to me too. Most of the wildflowers stopped blooming early this year because of the heat and the dryness. We are expecting nights in the 20’s next week and snow as low as 4,000 ft.
It resides near the base of a bleeding heart plant that did not do well this summer, and only a trace of pink was visible. Pretty, delicate little thing though.
No chipmunks in the UK, of course – I’ve only seen them in the wild once, in Colorado; here we have a few squirrels eating spring bulbs and planting acorns!
We have squirrels too, but they are very small ones who subsist mostly on pine nuts because we have no acorns in this region (and, of course, the sunflower seeds from my bird feeders).
We had a hot dry summer too. I hope your weather has changed for the better now. We’re still in a drought even though we had some rain last week.
I don’t recognize that flower but it reminds me of a snap dragon in a way.
Our weather has cooled, but it’s still extremely dry, so dry that several of the wildfires that were nearly out have come back to life and we have smoke problems yet again. Snow is expected this weekend for elevations about 4,500 feet and that will give us a little moisture.
Sad to hear of your loss, but delighted you are sharing photos again.

I think it may be, Linda. I didn’t plant it, but I suspect one of the chipmunks did.

Lovely flower good photo of the details too.
How strange that it should suddenly appear in Autumn (or Fall as you call it).

What a lovely pair. The unpredictability of flowers is part of their charm — how lovely that you were given this unexpected gift.

I would guess it is. We had some a summer ago, but in a garden a hundred feet away. I suspect the chipmunks…

It was touching to see the trace of pink in a place where I didn’t expect it, and they are very tiny.
