It was a fantastic moon last night, but I didn’t realize it was a blue moon until you posted it. And yes, it’s the 31st and the other full moon was on the 1st. They say it won’t happen again until 2015.
Very nice photo! You should frame that and hang it on your wall.

I wasn’t thinking about the blue moon either until I noticed it was very full and bright as it began to show. Maybe I’ll print a copy to hang on the door on Halloween.

I haven’t commented in quite a while but wanted you to know I’m still looking at all your posts. THis one is another great one, much different than your normal but I have enjoyed all the scenic and flower shots over the past coule of months. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Thanks Dave! I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying the photos. The wildflowers are about at the end of their season but the back country scenery is still there. I’m three trips behind on posting photos though. I’ll have to work on that. My biggest problem is trying to figure out which photos to post.

It was nice. The night was very clear and cool and the bright light of the moon dimmed the brightness of the stars. My camp was a simple one, just a tarp, a thin foam pad and a sleeping bag under the canopy of a fir tree. That needs to be done every once in awhile! Earlier that evening I had encountered a young guy who had been there the previous day scouting for elk. He told me there were lots of wolf tracks near a small lake a mile or so below the trail head and I stayed awake for quite some time hoping to hear them, especially with the moon so bright, but they were silent that night.

Did you wink at the moon, for Neil Armstrong? That was his wish – that we all wink at a full moon for him. It’s still full enough, I think. We had clouds too, so I had to put off my memorial wink until tonight!

You succeeded! We saw the blue moon the other night too. My pictures of it weren’t that great though, but that’s because I just have a point and shoot digital. I never can get the settings right for night photographs.

Night photos can be tricky and most of us don’t shoot much at night. I know I don’t. I have a lot of custom settings set in my Nikon and use spot metering. That way it acts a lot like a point and shoot and does pretty well with the moon and sunsets.

That is spooky! That sounds so nice to camp like that. I’d probably be scared to do that but since you’re so familiar with your natural surroundings it must be nice to do it so simply and be right there in the midst of it all.

I camp the same way down here. My wife thinks I’m nuts as I just find a relatively clear piece of ground next to the bayou and set up. I do use a tent because of the mosquito’s but otherwise it’s a spike camp. That picture was really neat, that tree top was perfect to combine with the moon. Special times!

I’ll use a tent if the weather’s bad. Or sleep in the back of my truck. The moon shot wasn’t planned, just saw it coming up through the trees on the ridge. It’s a place I love and I’ll remember the night.

It’s a great shot! I love the story of your camping trip, too. I can see why you’d leave the tripod and big lens behind on a trip like that. You sure are making the most of the season!

I will post photos of the trip when I get to it. (I’m now three trips behind.) It was a very long day, but when I reached my destination it was well worth it. I’m so glad that there is still wild country like that around!
