After no activity for over six months, suddenly the airport became crowded.

  1. A very busy airport, indeed! That must have been a delight to watch!

    • It was! And some little Blues kept flying around but they wouldn’t land. There were also a couple Cabbage Whites who also stayed aloft.

  2. How does one come upon something like this? I certainly never have. Jackpot, wow!

    • They were congregating on a moist spot on a Forest Service road just a few miles off the highway. There is a small stream in the canyon and some wildflowers in bloom on the hillsides. It seems to be a social gathering place for them. I’ve seen it many times before.

    • There were dozens, and while the individuals I’ve seen flitting around are quite wild, these let me approach quite close (~ one foot) for the photos.

  4. Airport?

Nice photos from butterflies and from so many. I still have to wait to see them here.

In Europe airports are not busy at this moment, nearly all are closed.

    • I’ve been following the volcanic ash issue there. What a mess!

    • Yes, and I bet there were lots of folks in Europe who wished their airport looked like this one!

  6. Lovely butterflies and they reminded me of a type of moth I’ve seen. I really like the colors and shape of their wings. How neat to see so many congregated in one place!

    • When their wings are folded, they have excellent camouflage. These are very common here and usually the earliest out in the spring.

    • I have seen even larger gatherings too, and that activity goes on throughout the summer, especially along small, fairly open streams.

  8. Another new one, and wow, I have never seen so many butterflies together. I just looked it up, and laughed to see that the west has a comma, and the east a question mark.

    • Several years ago I found a huge gathering of these while fishing a stream just west of here, but I can’t find the photos.

I wonder if there’s any significance to the comma and the question mark. Actually, off the top of my head, I’d have thought it the other way around! That’s funny!

  9. I guess they no need radar or a control tower or air traffic controllers.

    • Nope, they need none of that. They have what we’ve pretty much discarded: common sense and good judgement.
