For the easily amused

With our late spring there just hasn’t been much in the way of wildflowers appearing yet, but the winter moss is doing extraordinarily well. On the first mile or so of one of my favorite trails today there is a cliffy area where the greens were ever so pretty.

While admiring the moss on the cliff I noticed that there was quite a lot of water dripping through it and then I got sidetracked. What if I could catch a water droplet on a piece of moss? … and here’s where that took me. Sometimes it’s not too bad to be easily amused.

Versions of spring

Down by the river, Nature has many little gardens, each with its own unique version of spring.

Moss garden

This little shrub (height, about 6 inches) has decided it is time to put out new leaves in its little garden near the top of a large boulder just a few yards up from the river where it and its moss neighbors catch the still-weak rays of winter sun.

This moss garden measures about four feet by two feet and it covers much of the top of a very tall boulder right at the water’s edge. I admire the landscape artist Who created the scene!

One thing leads to another…

It started with a photo of some bright colored winter moss,

and then because some water drops on the moss just sparkled, taking some macro shots seemed to be the thing to do, and on, and on…

The next time you see a guy crawling around among the rocks down by the river maybe you’ll understand.

Winter moss

Spring Creek

This is the time of year when the winter mosses put on their bright green clothes and play by the water. These are beneath the tall cedars in the Spring Creek canyon.

River moss

OK, so I’ll have to come clean and admit it: I’m just a pushover for winter moss. I stalked to within camera range of these examples yesterday down by the river as they basked in the sun. (We are having a bit of a blizzard at the moment tonight, so I suppose they are now tucked in under a fresh white blanket of snow.)

After spending years wondering why the moss seems to be at its annual best at exactly this time of year, I finally came to my senses and realized that it’s simply getting ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!
