Winter visit to Dog Lake and the waterfall on the stream that feeds it

At least once every winter I try to visit the waterfall on the stream that feeds Rainbow Lake (AKA Dog Lake) about twenty miles from here on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and I chose today for this winter’s visit. I included snowshoes with my equipment, but found them to be unnecessary this time: it was one of the areas that received very little of last night’s snow. To my surprise I found instead a brief period of sun and some blue sky!

Visit to a Waterfall

Every year, at some time during winter, I try to visit the waterfall that stands about a quarter mile from the northeast corner of Dog Lake (Rainbow Lake) on the Flathead Indian Reservation. I missed completely last year and for one reason or other didn’t make it this winter until today. Some of the ice still remains despite the warm temperatures, and today the sun was out and the sky was blue. A good day for a visit.

Waterfall at Rainbow Lake

Waterfall at Rainbow Lake

This small waterfall on the Flathead Indian Reservation here in western Montana gets only a few visitors every year. It is on no maps, it has no name, there is not a sign anywhere advertising its existence and even the trail that leads up to it is unmarked. Yet it is not without its own quiet beauty.

Waterfall at Dog Lake

There’s a scientific name for someone who goes out hoping to photograph some wildflowers, takes a tripod (which is of absolutely no use for wildflowers) and doesn’t think to take anything but a macro lens: it’s doofus photographicus.

Completely predictably, the result of the outing was to find an unusually large amount of water in a waterfall that usually doesn’t have that much and a strong desire to photograph it. Well, any lens in a storm! I tried.

A waterfall with no name

Rainbow Lake, or Dog Lake as the old timers still call it (seen in my previous post), is fed by four small streams, none of which has a name. One of the streams, not far from the lake itself, has a rather pretty waterfall, also without a name. It has two parts.

It’s difficult to photograph this place, though perhaps only for a beginner, because of the way it is is oriented: if the sun is out the sun will play on part of the water, yet the rest of the falls is in deep shade. The area at the base of the falls is steep and rocky and yesterday when I took these photos, still covered with deep snow and ice: dense brush allows only a small area from which to take photos, and so the options are quite limited.
