Tree skeleton art

In a remote and secluded canyon in the back country and seen only by the wild things of the forest, Nature has chosen to display this piece of Her art. For whose eye has it been created and what critic might venture there to gaze upon it?

A different view

Known mostly to be a poisonous, noxious Eurasian invader and a serious threat to rangeland in the northwest, it’s not entirely without esthetic appeal when viewed closely. (The raindrops were a bonus.)

Spurge flowers are interesting because what at first appears to be a small, green flower with a yellowish tint is actually a bract that encloses a cluster of several male flowers and one female flower. The male flowers each consist of a single stamen, the female of a stalked pistil: none have petals or sepals.

The chokecherries are blooming now and if the quantity and quality of blossoms are any indication it will be a good year for making more of my favorite jelly and syrup!

High desert landscapes

There is some interesting and very pretty scenery in the border area of northern Arizona and southern Utah. Here are a few photos taken there last week when a small clearing occurred in the sky. On clear, sunny days the views there are very picturesque but on the day I traveled through the sky clouded up and was very drab. I was disappointed, but it couldn’t be helped. Maybe next time…
