After sub-zero temperatures all of Saturday, now the snow has started to come in. After removing about 6 inches of it today, I look forward to seeing even more tomorrow and tomorrow night. What a beautiful winter it is turning out to be! Here are a few pictures from a hike today. If nothing else, I have a very happy dog: he loves the snow!

Looks like it cleared up here too today. The was a lot of snow to plow this morning, but now the sky has cleared and the temperature is dropping.

My dog is almost perfect for winter weather. His hait is short so it doesn’t collect snow but very thick to keep him warm. Winter is his favorite season.

Those are gorgeous photos of a delightful snow — and the snow on Buster’s belly has to be an indication of how much fun he’s having! Are the totals up in the mountains beginning to increase? I think I remember that there was some concern about not enough snow/a dry spring and summer.

Buster is a very happy dog now that we have lots of snow. The snowpack in now up to normal levels with lots more in the forecast. The closest ski area has 110″ at the top.

Buster is happiest when we go for a hike in the snow. On Saturday it was below zero all day so I took him out for short hikes off and on all day so his feet didn’t get too cold, but since the temperatures were more moderate and we’ve been out a lot. I don’t think I would like all of the rain you have been getting.

The winter rains are one of the features of the Pacific Northwest. It is rather grey and wet most of the time, and I don’t think about sunglasses so much in winter. But the summers are dry with little to no rain from July through September, and getting hotter. All the rain and snowpack in the mountains gets us through the annual summer drought. But even on rainy days, there are often brief periods of sun where all those raindrops hanging from tree, shrub and blade of grass light up in prismatic brilliance. And there are so many rainbows to see here. 🙂

All of that rain though sure creates some beautiful plant life including great forests. Despite the snow, our annual precipitation is quite low in the valleys. I do llove summer rain!

I would like to have my camera handy for that. Haven’t seen a sleigh lately, but there are lots of snowmobiles. There used to be a local doctor who had his own dog sled and team of dogs.

It was just something he enjoyed. He would often set up at the local golf course and give kids rides in the sled.

Yes, he does enjoy that as long as I am in the room. When I adopted Buster, he adopted me too and wherever I am he will be right near me. He doesn’t like it on the rare occasion when I go somewhere without him and when I go out on a fire or accident call he will lie in his bed next to mine and not move until I return. He’s an amazing dog!

beautiful winter indeed. what started out mild has truly gained momentum. The ‘big’ storm only gave me about 10″, not the up to 19″ predicted and yesterday instead of the storm we had blue skies! Your photos are lovely.

I can fully understand, we had a black lab for 15 years. He was my best bud too, he looked out for all of us, but me especially, him & I loved the outdoors together. I loved him so much and still miss him. We lost him on Valentine’s Day five years ago. 😦

We are already seeing purple lupins blooming. We live in the foothills of the Mazatzals, which have been uncharacteristically green since we arrived in December. January and February have been cool and rainy, and we had frost again last night. Lots of clouds have meant wonderful sunrises and sunsets too!

I love those trees too. Fortunately I live in the NW corner of the Lolo National Forest, which contains about two million acres of them. As far a growing up… I never have and hope Buster doesn’t either.

We have a very beautiful world in which to live! I adopted Buster from a shelter and have no idea what his earlier life was like, but he loves his new life with me and he loves the outdoors and the back country every bit as much as I do.
