Over the past week we finally received some significant snowfall and today I finally got around to taking a short hike to enjoy some of it.

Montana Outdoors 
Beautiful photos from snow country! It’s still been milder than usual here in my part of western Oregon. No snow yet this season. Winter rain has been down a bit too, which has me concerned for summer.

Thanks Lavinia! It has been extraordinarily mild here so far too. We have received about a foot of new snow during the past week here in the valley, but the snowpack in our surrounding mountains is about normal. The nearest ski area (about 30 miles by air) now has 87 inches.

I guess we are seeing what weather people call “El Nino” conditions resulting in a warmer and drier winter for our areas. I also wish for more snowpack in the mountains even though they say the snow pack in the local area is at normal levels after the recent snows.

Glorious scenes! I love the frosted rose hip. I wonder if our own ‘significant snowfall’ is on its way, as we seem to have had nothing but rain and wind so far this winter.

As always, your photos capture the beauty of the Big Sky Country. My youngest daughter enjoys skiing at Big Sky’s Lone Mountain, which had received close to 40 plus inches of snow in the past week. She enjoyed some phenomenal skiing.

The recent snows have been really good for the skiers. It’s a nice reward for those who get outside and enjoy winter, but also good for our next summer’s water supply.

It was good to get out in the snow again and the day was quite pleasant, even with a little sun at times. Great to be outside!

As others have said, it appears your snow fall this year appears quite mild. At least in the valley. Nothing like the winter of 2017 if I remember right from your posts? Glad that the mountains are getting their share. Take care

Exactly. I enjoy that cold air very much and greatly prefer it to the hot (and usually smoky) air of summer.

The rose hip looks remarkably like an octopus! I’m glad you finally had some snow. The photos always are delightful, but I especially like the one of Weeksville Creek. Here’s to an increasingly normal winter!

That’s a pleasant little stream. From the place in the photo on down (about two miles) to the river it flows quite well all year, but two miles above the stream bed is dry. There are several small streams in the area that are like that.

Mine too. In 2007 I hiked that whole road one day. My wife dropped me off at Mud Creek and I hiked over the divide to Hwy 200. Rather long but very pleasant hike.

We hadn’t seen the sun in awhile. We had about twice that amount in the past week, but with higher temps in the day it has been reduced to about that.

Beautiful countryside (or should I say mountainside). That last shot looks like the start of a good downhill ski run. Hard to believe you’re under snow, while we in Melbourne finally ‘topped out’ at 45.2C (115F) on Friday. The air felt so hot and humid you could almost cut it 🙂 ). What I wouldn’t do for some crisp winter snow and fresh air, but your images do help a bit.

Awesome snow / winter photos. Did You drive down in the last photo? If, my hat! In Helsinki we have had cold and many snow falls. After two weeks I will start my winter photos.

No, I didn’t drive that road I knew there was ice under that layer of snow and I didn’t want to have to put the chains on the Jeep. We have had very little snow so far this winter at the valley level and it has been quite warm Tonight is supposed to be quite cold, then warm up again in a few days.

No, that one is about 3 miles away, and one on which I spend many hours throughout the year driving and/or hiking. It provides access to some beautiful high country and several favorite trails.

It might work for a brief time on a day when the sun is out. Other times it’s almost too cold for a camera!

I walk or hike every day, no matter what the weather. In winter it’s special when I can get a bit into the back country right after a snow.
