Just a little over two weeks ago when I visited the Corona Lake area, the trees were yellow and gold and the ground was brown. When I returned yesterday the ground was golden and the trees were brown, and a little white had entered the landscape.

Beauriful. I was wondering when the snows begin. I need to hurry up and post my Autumn images of Crested Butte, Colorado.

We are having an early snow. Too soon to know if it will stay or get back to more normal weather for awhile.

I plan to travel there in the summer so I’m sure the snow will be gone by then. However, I wouldn’t mind a little. π

It depends on how early you come. The higher elevations have snow until well into June, but it takes some hiking to get up into it.

Thanks. Good info. We’ll probably not go to higher elevation. π

I remember it was literally days ago when you said you thought winter was close…you know your land, montucky. It’s beautiful.

It’s hard to tell if this will continue right into winter or whether there will be still one more spell of milder weather. I think the high country will stay white now.

Interesting how the snow dulls the fall colours and yet accents the greens with that dusting of white. I shivered as I looked at the photos. All the animals (birds, deer, bears, and rodents) will be scrambling harder for their food now.

That was the first snow that I’ve been in this season and it really felt cold!

Yes, I get used to that very quickly. We had a brief snow this afternoon, just enough to turn the grassy areas white. It was just beautiful coming down.

The white snow makes a lovely contrast in the landscape. A pureness, a delicate change –

It does, at least for now. Later things will be almost all white up there.

Thankfully we’ve had only a dusting so far but our turn will come.
I’m sure the Jeep came in handy that day!

Yes, when the weather turns quickly in the back country the Jeep is a comfort.

Still looks very pretty. The contrast between the white and green, with a smattering of gold and brown looks lovely (to me).
I can’t wait for your snow-covered landscapes though. Don’t know why snow appeals to me so much, but it does. I imagine it’s very challenging to photograph an all-white scene.

It’s a start. Can’t tell if this will be a big snow year or not yet. Personally I like a lot of snow but don’t like the severe cold that sometimes comes in from Canada.

Well, well. Lookie who I see, down there at the edge of the lake! Buddy’s going to be happy with the change of seasons, I suspect. The combination of green, warm autumn colors, and snow is marvelous. Even that last photo of the road is pleasing: larch needles and snow make a nice combination.

We are expecting snow tonight down to the valley level, and at the elevation where these pictures were taken they expect about 5 inches. The golden roads will disappear, but maybe there will be a respite after this week; who knows. Buster enjoys the snow and cooler weather in general although he didn’t complain too much about the hot summer.

It looks as if that road can become very treacherous in heavy snow and rain?

Comment by de Wets Wild — November 6, 2018 @ 8:33 pm
The ground is very rocky there and so rain doesn’t affect it but a big volume of snow can be a problem (over a foot or so). Later in the winter those roads are all closed because of snow.

Jeep is a perfect vehicle for such trips! We used to have a Jeep GC and the nav system kept telling us to take the back roads… would have made for a really long trip from AZ to Alberta…

For all of the back road travel that I do I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving anything else, especially in severe weather conditions.

We had our first dusting of snow this morning. Our fall just wasn’t as nice as years past; it’s been pretty rainy. Don’t know what kind of winter weather we’re in for this year.

It snowed here most of the day today, at times very heavily but it also melted soon as the temp stayed just above freezing during the day. Tonight there have been a lot of slide-off accidents in our region but fortunately no serious ones so I haven’t been called out…yet.

Still some hints of autumn. It’s pretty with the snow but seems so early. I know it has already snowed in the midwest and even in northern AZ already.

Even the feel of autumn is no longer around here. We are entering into the freezing rain, freezing fog, snow flurry time of year just before winter comes to stay.

Hi Montucky, So lovely! I miss the mountains, but am going to be out West in the mountains sometime later in the year. I will enjoy seeing the forest again. We do have Cypress and Pines but the Pines are plantation block planted and not a real natural forest here in a lot of spots (turpentine).

The frosting of snow looks beautiful, especially in the pines!
It was an extended, warm autumn here for a while. Mornings after clear nights are getting colder now, down in the 20s and 30s. We were up in Spokane last weekend, about 8 hrs farther north and east of us. They have had some snow already.

Your weather is much like mine at the moment. I live about 120 miles east of Spokane, and we have been in the teens at night and 20’s to 40’s daytime. There is a pretty good amount of snow about 3000 feet higher up the mountains.

Lovely photo. First winter marks visible. We had some snow beyond the Arctic Circle, but then came a worm period which melted all. Yesterday cold weather came back and here in Helsinki the temperature varies on the both side of freezing point.

Our temperature has been fluctuating too and the snow has just been off and on at the valley level. It is piling up now though higher up the mountains.

autumn snow is so pretty with the mix of colors that abound. up here most the snow has melted and it looks like autumn (past the colors). but in my little snow belt…. most the snow remains.

We have no snow on the ground (at 2400 feet) but higher up there is plenty (over 6000 feet). There have been some slippery roads from frost on the bridges.
