Three-spot Mariposa Lily (or) Pointed Tip Mariposa Lily
Pointed Tip Mariposa Lily ~ calochortus apiculatus
I have photographed this species many times but was never able to capture all of the different colors at its center until today. This one was growing in deep shade and I used some rather ridiculous camera settings: aperture priority with an aperture of f/32 and a -2 EV exposure bias and the on-board flash with flash compensation also set at -2.

They are indeed. I know of nothing that compares to Nature’s beauty.

There is not much that can compare to Nature’s flowers. I’m not a fan of most of our recent technology, but I make an exception when it comes to digital cameras and the lenses that are available that let us see those beautiful l;ittle details.

Yes, cameras and computers to help us post and preserve the pictures we take.

Hi Montucky, What a pretty photo of that bloom. Gorgeous center and I like how the little hair growths show as well as the bluish purple areas. Good job! Have a super weekend!

It worked! That’s a pretty but unusual flower. It reminds me of a trillium because of its threes.

There are several species of this flower here. This is the most common. I’ve found the prettiest one only in a high area of the Coeur d’Alene mountains , but that place was destroyed in last year’s fire. The road is now blocked by a rock slide though and I can’t get up there to see if the flowers survived.

You did extremely well in capturing that beautiful centre (of the Lily) 🙂

The petals on that one are pretty ragged, but the center was still intact and colorful.

The good thing is that those settings worked. This is one case where flash saved the day.

I often use a slight fill flash because of the shadows created by the flower petals.

I stopped when I read f/32. I don’t think my camera will do that. But at least I understood the concept, and know how to adjust EV and the flash settings. More experimentation is called for! The result certainly was worth it. That’s a beautiful flower, and so well presented. Besides, what are a few ragged petals among friends?

It’s unusual because of all those different colors. It usually hides some colors behind the hair.
