Large ice falls at the base of Eddy Mountain. The tree at the base of the falls provides some size perspective.

Worth a closer look.

For years I have enjoyed the company of a common house plant for its beautiful patterned leaves and sometimes noticed (and ignored) a tiny white blossom on it. The large leaves measure about 6” X 5″ and at the base of this one you can see some tiny buds.

Maranta leuconeura

Even though I have long been accustomed to looking closely at tiny wildflowers, I never looked at the tiny blossoms of this plant (which measure only 3/8” across) until yesterday, and here’s what I saw when I did:

It’s good to see some blue above those peaks again!

Colorful lichens

Filed under: Lichens — Tags: — montucky @ 9:08 pm

Today while loitering among the rocks on a nearly vertical cliffy area with a southern exposure (the only place around not still covered with snow), I could see a variety of tiny lichen colonies and was struck by the variety and sometimes the intensity of their individual colors. I wish I understood the purpose of those colors if indeed there is one.

Well, maybe better late than never…

After one of my last hikes of last summer into the Patrick’s Knob Roadless area on the top part os USFS trail 205 and the east end of USFS trail 404 I put these photos into a pending file and forgot them. It might be interesting to note that these plants are presently resting under about eight feet of snow.
