Montana Outdoors
Dreamy. Not much snow, though…

These photos were taken from an elevation of only 2400 feet. The tall peaks in the background are over 7000 and while the lower slopes don’t have a deep snow pack, the peaks do.

Beautiful views. I wonder how deep the snow is and if there will be enough snow melt to fill your reservoirs.

The peaks in the background of the photos are over 7000 feet high and not accessible this time of year, but the nearest ski area is about 30 air miles to the west and today they are reporting 97 inches at the top (which is over a thousand feet lower than these). The reservoirs in this part of Montana never have a problem filling up. In fact, the challenge is to keep their levels low enough by the end of winter to make room for the spring runoff so it doesn’t exceed the capacity of the spillways on the dams. The last report I’ve seen said that the snowpack is above normal for this area.

Are the Coeur d’Alene Mountains in Idaho or Montana? I know the city of Coeur d’Alene is in Idaho, but not sure about the mountains.

They are in both northern Idaho and northwest Montana. These are at the east end of them.

The mountains are glorious, but that’s an interesting cloud that’s formed in the second photo. It looks like some kind of giant paramecium swimming through the sky!

I liked these photos because in them you can see the visual change made by distance from the green in the foreground progressing to the blue in the distance.

The Coeur d’Alene mountains extend about a hundred miles through northern Idaho into northwest Montana. The highest peak in the range is Cherry Peak at 7352 feet and I can see it from my home. Wikipedia says the second highest is Patrick’s knob (6837 feet) which isn’t true. Penrose Peak is the second highest at 7231 feet. In July of 2008 I hiked to Penrose and documented the trip in 9 posts on my blog, including photos of it and Cherry. It is about a 9 mile hike, but well worth it to see that wild and beautiful (and roadless) country from the top.

I had already fallen in love with that area before my hike to Penrose and that love has only intensified since. Next summer I plan to make the hike again and see what effects there were from the big fire that covered much of he northern part of it last year. I don’t think Cherry Peak or Penrose were affected but I know that a lower peak (Sacajawea) was and it included one of my favorite trails, taking out also a couple of huge and ancient Ponderosa pines that I considered national treasures.
