After about a week, the snow has finally stopped and a couple cold nights are coming up (temps in the low teens (F) so today I went on a short hike on a favorite forest road. The snow was deep enough to make hiking a little unpleasant, but the trees are nicely decorated.

It is beautiful but I’m in no hurry to see it here!
It looks like it was early. The larches haven’t even dropped their needles yet.

An early snow is not unusual here, but this was a fairly heavy one. Now the forecast for next week is much warmer. Problem is the forecasts have been changin on an almost hourly rate so we don’t have any idea what to expect.

My favourite time of year in Montana and your photos mark the trail very well.
And I don’t care how cold it is in the snow – I love seeing it, being in it and (used to) love skiing in it.

In the middle of winter, snow here means warmth. Those clear nights Like tonight will be are what’s really cold. It’s forecast for 11F here tonight and I’m happy to have a few inches of snow on the roof!

Aren’t you glad you have that nice stack of wood close at hand? I remember you saying that cutting wood warms twice — now you get to enjoy the “second warmth.” The photos really are beautiful. I noticed that larch with its needles glowing through the snow, too.

Yes, that firewood is comforting now that it has turned cold for awhile. The fire is really nice! It’s a little unusual to have the larch in full color with snow around. Some of them have lost their needles though. The others will have a respite after the next couple days and maybe stay colorful for awhile.

I think a few days of your weather would be nice at the moment, although I do love the snow and once I get acclimated to it I love breathing the ice cold air and feeling the cold wind on my face. (Also the warmth of the fire when I come back inside!)

A cold snap this time of year isn’t uncommon. When we moved back here in 1993 it was in mid-December and the weather wasn’t too cold, but there were remnants of deep snow that fell just before Thanksgiving.

The Christmas scenes are pretty early, but still pretty. A couple times when I was a kid I worried that there wouldn’t be snow for Christmas. One year there was no snow until we got 6 inches on Christmas Eve.

A winter wonderland. I do remember, from the midwest, what you say about breathing in that ice cold air. It’s very invigorating. But I can remember it well enough to not need to experience it, haha. You’re living in the perfect place for you.

It’s crazy to think you already are getting a lot of snow. I know you are on the other side of North America but the climates are so different from where I am. It is just starting to get cold around here and it will get cold for a couple days then get warm again. It’s so frustrating I just want it to get cold and we get some snow. It’s coming soon though this morning I was up before the sunrise and you could see the occasional flake of snow in the floodlight of the house but it hasn’t been cold enough for it to stick yet. I love seeing your pictures I have been to Montana before but it was during your “ summer months” and there was no snow so it’s cool to see the other side of it keep it up.

beautiful snowy images.
above freezing here, huge slabs of snow threaten to crash off the roof. Looking forward to that crash, a fun winter thing. Don’t ever remember that happening early Nov.

After a few days of rain, the valley snow is mostly gone, but up higher there is still plenty. This is unusual for this early.
