Yarrow

Yarrow ~ Achillea millefolium

I don’t know if it’s because of the elevation (this is growing at about 5,000 feet) or if there is another factor, but the Yarrow that I have seen in this particular location seems to look more robust and show more character and detail than what I have found at the valley level.

  1. I’ve always found Yarrow easy to grow and it quite likes semi-shade……….perhaps suggesting it grows better in cooler climates?

    • It could be simply that it is a little cooler at that elevation.

  2. I guess it has to be more robust to survive at that elevation. When I looked at this photo, I thought of the word “crowd.” It’s just like looking down at a sea of faces.

  3. It could be the year and the light… ours looks this great this year, too… 59 degrees north, south slope, 550 metres. I’ve noticed that afternoon light really makes them pop.

    • I’ve noticed a big difference this year between the ones in the valley and the ones at a higher elevation.

  4. I’ve never seen so much yarrow as we have this year and it’s doing well. Here it likes to grow in hot, sandy waste areas and along roadsides. I’ve never seen it on a hill or mountainside.

    • It likes full or partial sun, and I see it here in the valleys, along logging roads or on the taller peaks where there are large open places in the forest. It’s doing well up high, but not so well at low elevations this year.
