That paintbrush looks surprisingly fresh, for all the heat you’ve had in the area. (We finally got our much-needed rain here, but it will soon be back to the drought, I’m sure.) Great photos!

I’m glad that you got some rain. There’s a chance for some here in a few days, but it’s only a 20% chance.

It’s very hot here in New Hampshire to the point of watering the garden and flowers. I haven’t had to do that all summer…we’ve had lots of rain here.

I don’t know how to feel about it being that hot that high up but my gut instinct tells me that it can’t be normal, or good for the wildlife.
On the other hand that single shot of the Indian paintbrush would have made the trip worthwhile for me.

This is a tough summer for plants especially. Most of the animals will sleep during the day in the deep shade of thickets and feed at night, but sometimes their water source will dry up. The bears should be doing well because there are a lot of huckleberries.
That Paintbrush shot was one of those “keep your foot against a tree so you don’t slide down the slope while lying on your side trying your best to keep the camera still while the flower sways in the breeze” type shots. You know the kind.

Believe it or not, I found Indian paintbrush blooming last weekend. It must be due to the rains we’ve had, and perhaps just the right temperatures. Who knows? But their bloom was finished a couple of months ago — or so we thought! Even though your hike was cut short, that top photo is gorgeous. I hope your skies get covered with rain clouds, not smoke.

I hope so too, but there are now fires all around, fortunately no really big ones yet! We are getting a little smoke from fires in British Columbia.

Somehow I thought the summer weather in Montana would be cooler! Plants are turning brown and dying here in Texas too. The weather is sun HOT and dry. Cactus don’t seem to mind, but everything else is starting to look a little burnt. Someone told me that humans who are foolish enough to go outside and wander around too long in this weather…quickly turn into “people jerky.”

Our temperatures this summer so far have been from 10 to 20 degrees warmer than normal, and it has been very dry.The grasses at the valley level are brown now. I can believe one would turn to “jerky” in the summer sun. At the high elevations the temperature is lower than in the valleys though (by about 3.5ºF for every thousand foot increase).

I think we all need relief from the heat all across the country. The humidity is really awful here right now and I can barely stand to go outside. Yuck.

It’s a little easier here because our humidity is extremely low which makes it feel more comfortable, but its terrible for the fires.
