Montana Outdoors
Simple is often beautiful, as is this flower. I didn’t know there was white hawkweed!

I didn’t either until I got a close up photo of this one today and identified it. It seems to grow mostly in the western states, but also in Canada. The plant itself is very plain, but I love the tiny blossom. It uses much the same strategy as the Pathfinder: large leaves in a cluster at ground level and a tall, bare stem with tiny (<1/4 inch) blossoms at the top. The blossom looks inconsequential without magnification.

I found one in the hill country that looks much like this — it’s called Pinaropappus roseus, or white dandelion. It’s larger, but has those toothy edges. They’re both simple, and lovely.

I like it when I can keep the background from being so busy that it detracts from the flower. This one is a delicate beauty!
