Turned back by snow again
Yesterday I set out on a hike up to Revett Lake but found a good amount of snow within a mile above the trail head, and because I am quite familiar with that trail I knew that there would be deep snow banks on the higher part of the trail also and so I went no further. I’ll give it a couple more weeks. Here are a few photos of the lower part of the trail: it’s a very pretty trail and a beautiful lake.
The altitude is high enough that there are very few flowers blooming, but this little one is growing right in a small spring that issues from the hillside. I have probably seen the species before, but for some reason have never identified it, even though it really is a pretty little thing.

I thought the would be pretty good snow up there. I hiked up that trail only about a half mile just to see how it looked. We’re still a couple weeks short of having good access to the high country. The trail to Revett looked like it could stand to be sawed out too. The one to Baldy Mountain has been cleared and at least the lower part of the Spring Creek trail has been sawed out. They have probably cleared the trail to Big Hole Lookout, or they will soon because this month they are going to finish the renovation of the old cabin.

I just love seeing your scenery! Stunning views. I also love the cliff face with the scree beneath – looks interesting!

Finally enough snow has melted that there is at least some access into the high country. Unfortunately, this kind of scenery isn’t visible from the highways, except from the few highways that go over mountain passes.

I think I would have turned back too, but at least you saw some great views.
I’ve never heard of the small leaved montia. It is pretty!

Yes, it was pleasant, although short. I will go back later. I must have assumed that the Montia was a spring beauty: it looks very much the same but grows in water.

There is still plenty of snow pack left in the higher places on the north slopes of the mountains. It is staying a few weeks later this year because of the amount that built up this past winter.

The flower was a surprise because no others are blooming that high up yet. I guess I haven’t seen everything yet!

On a post the other day you mentioned Cascade Creek and the origin of it as Revett Lake. Just over the border here in Clark Fork, Idaho we a Cascade Creek that comes out and drains into The Lightening Creek that goes to the CF River and on into Lake Pend Oreille ~ Could this be the same creek ? Just wondering~ Frances Schenck~~I really like the posts of Montana Outdoors !!!

Hello Frances! I’m not really sure because I don’t have a good map of that area, but I think this creek flows into the Coeur d’Alene River down toward Murray and then I think it will get to Lake Coeur d’Alene. I’m very pleased that you like my posts! Thank you!

I especially like the pink anthers on the flower. I tend to think of pollen as yellow, but of course it can be different colors, and here the pink adds to the impression of delicacy. You’re right that there’s always something different to see — and isn’t it fun that this spring flower grows near springs? Of course you had to spring into action with your camera when you saw it!

I have always loved wildflowers but it’s interesting that I have seen so many more species once I started carrying a camera everywhere.

Beautiful shots! I replied to your comment on my post but then realized you probably don’t know I replied 🙂 Here’s what I wrote: It must be a WordPress issue because I have not been receiving notices on comments I make or comments I get either. Like when you make a comment on a comment I made on your post, it never notifies me anymore. And I’ve never received notices of people’s posts. For instance, I “followed” your blog years ago but I’ve never once gotten a notification of your new posts nor anyone else’s. That’s basically what I use my blogroll for…to check other people’s blogs.

Thanks! From what I can tell, the email notifications (or not) are random. I also have started using a reader which will show me people’s new posts and when I’m looking at my blog, the little bell in the upper right corner will show me new comments. My hope is that the system will some time return to the way it used to be.

Hi Montucky, I am surprised you still have snow patches in June. I guess that is my Florida take on it all. Your pictures are lovely. I always enjoy your views of trails, the hillsides and of course, the blossoms. Have a great day tomorrow!

It is normal to have snow here at high elevations lasting until into July, and there was more snow than usual this past winter. This time of year I get anxious to hike to some of the peaks and usually run into snow there. I’m glad that you like seeing the scenes from Montana’s back country!

I can almost breathe that mountain air! Any bears up that way — blacks? grizzlies?

There are lots of black bears around here. Grizzlies are a little farther north and west, the closest probably 50 miles. I love the black bears, grizz not so much.

We have both here. Sadly there is a “shoot, shovel and shut up” mentality among some folks. There used to be a black bear den on our place but it was abandoned before we bought it — I keep hoping that someone will take up residence. 🙂

Folks here are very tolerant with bears, especially black bears, but there is still a kind of mindless hatred for wolves, although that seems to be dying down now a little.

Yes, these mountain views are magnificent. This time of year I find it hard to take a needed day of rest in between outings.
