This morning the mist rising off the river nearly filled the valley. I was lucky to catch just a bit of the sun coming through the mist.

The picture was taken on my morning walk. The trick was to keep the camera inside my parka and my hands in my pockets until the scene was just right.

Gosh & and I thought I was cold! it’s only about -1 here in Yorkshire but coming from about 24C. Hummmm.
Love the image as it captures the cold frosty air brilliantly, well made and I envy you if that is a morning walk.

One of the first things I do every morning, usually at sunrise, is go for a walk with my canine friend. It’s a good start to the day and often there is a splendid scene waiting.

I don’t know if the sun is strong enough to burn off the river mist this time of year, or whether it just dissipates from a breeze up the river, but the mist doesn’t usually last very long.

It does. The slight differences from a summer or spring fog are interesting and exciting too. (Besides the ice cakes floating down the river.)

Simply beautiful (and cold).
Nothing like some fog/mist to create atmosphere in a photo or in reality.

One of the many good things about having a large river so close by is that there are often mists, fog, or other weather conditions attached to it.

I do enjoy the cold temperatures of winter, but I am concerned about those who travel the highways. This kind of cold can be dangerous.

We did have full sun today. although it had little strength. The sky was deep blue and tonight the stats are extra bright. It’s -4 at the moment and heading down.

Hi Montucky, Really beautiful sight. Looks so pretty but yes, chilly. Excellent photo! Have a wonderful day. I will enjoy the warmth here in Florida a few more days before we get slightly chilly into the 60s (at least it may rain some more in coming days). Have an outstanding day tomorrow!

I wouldn’t mind having a week of your weather right about now. It would be a nice break. Next week though it will reach into the low 30’s which is warm by our winter standards.

You really have been blessed with some wonderful opportunities recently. Between this photo and the one of the moon at the edge of the cloud — why, I’d just be walking around sighing with satisfaction! This is so beautiful. You mentioned keeping your camera under your parka — is there anything else that needs to be done to “cold proof” a camera?

Yes, I have had some great opportunities lately. I think a large part of that is just being outside so much. I do spend the majority of my non-sleeping hours outdoors.
I really don’t know what can be done to “cold proof” a camera. I try to keep mine warm and dry and make sure the battery is fully charged. It uses a lot of battery power when it’s cold out. It would not be good to let the camera get really cold because it might induce condensation internally which would not be good for it.

That’s what I was thinking about — the condensation. Of course, our cold isn’t your cold. It’s going to be about 40-45F this weekend. Still, I plan to be out and about, and want to be careful. That’s a good tip about the batteries — thanks for that.

My camera sees a lot of time in temps in the 40’s, but I still keep it in a case unless I’m actually shooting something. I have carried it for 10 -12 hours in those temps many times. If there’s any question about moisture, it’s good to keep it in a plastic bag so it retains its own humidity level. I always carry several bags in my pack or camera case just for that.

Also, if I’m hiking when it’s so cold that I need to keep the camera inside my parka, I keep it in a plastic bag so possible vapor from perspiration doesn’t introduce it to a moister environment.

Another beauty!! Sigh… I find that the cold kind of draws me outside.. The other day as I walked and not even close to what you see, but it started snowing.. I loved it!

The cold draws me outside too, and snow in the air always does, night or day. Fortunately I am very well equipped to deal with the cold and therefore can enjoy it to the utmost.

I live alone away from the cities, but not all that far from the highway. The way the world has been the last few years, I have started locking my doors at night, but when it’s this cold, I leave them unlocked, just in case…

Despite what we see in the media, this is still a beautiful planet!
Last night’s low was -14F, but according to the most recent forecast that should have been the coldest night of this winter’s fourth influx of Arctic air. Three more cold nights and we should be back up to more seasonal temperatures.

Yes, it’s really nice to see. The river near my house is not easily accessible this year because of the deep snow or I would spend more time in that morning steam. It has also been quite cold during the time when the steam forms. There was quite a bit of it this morning at -6 degrees.
