Did you take your bear spray outside with you, along with the camera? Something had to set off that alarm….

When I go out late at night I take along something a little heavier than bear spray, usually in 40 caliber. The alarm though only reacts to metal objects and it does give a false alarm sometimes; I’ve never figured out why.

Maybe it’s aliens in metal armour. Oh dear, now I’ve scared you. I think it’s a good idea to go out with something heavy duty. You don’t want to surprise a grizzly or a cougar. I know the cougars are active around here even in the winter. Lots of wolves in the outlying areas too.. I’ve seen their droppings when I’ve been mushroom picking (not recently, but other times, so I know they’re out there).

A Griz would be very unlikely right here. A Black Bear really isn’t a threat and they are in hibernation by now anyway. Wolves, despite all of the anti-wolf propaganda are never a threat at all. Cougar however, certainly can be. And, more dangerous and likely to be a problem than all of these would be a renegade member of our own species.

I get a false alarm about once a month. The unusual thing was that had I not responded to the notice I would have missed the scene.

Do I believe that Nature came and knocked at your door (or set off your alarm) to get you to look at the moon? Well, not precisely. On the other hand, there are those times when the urge to get up, to go out, to make a turn, to change plans, ends in a way we never could have predicted. Sometimes, it’s like a call that can’t be denied. I’m thinking about my sudden swerve into Pond Creek Wildlife Management area. I could have missed the sign, I could have stuck to my plans, I could have gotten lost or turned around and never found it. But there it was, and now I have a memory of a wonderful experience. And you went out and found the moon for us — it’s beautiful!

Could it have something to do with the big meteor storm Geminids which we could watch at night Dec 13 (in DK)?

I doubt if it had anything to do with the meteor shower but I don’t know. I think it was just the moon rising just above a cloud formation that had formed at the east end of the valley. It was quite unusual though.

Sorry, my question was a bit mixed with my first lines, but I was thinking about the magnetic induktion sensor, could it perhaps react to such meteor shower? Probably not, but on the other hand…
