In the high country of the Coeur d’Alene Mountains the transition from Summer to Fall begins in layers. There was new snow on some of the peaks in the Cabinet Mountains this morning.

Hot summer here, and now, suddenly, fall and winter are at the nation’s doorstep. I read in the Flathead Beacon that Going to the Sun Road is closed due to snow at Logan pass. Mountain peaks are starting to turn white. I hope your wood pile is in good shape for the winter.

I’m on Galveston Bay in Texas, and today the first osprey wheeled in. I always am excited to see them — they’re a sign that, even while we continue to sweat and long for autumn, it’s on the way. I heard it calling about 3 pm, and it took an hour to locate it, but I finally did. It’s such fun to watch the migrations — and amazing.

We are having a brief cold front moving through but the forecast is for temps near 80 again by the weekend. The peaks east of here had a little snow during the night and tonight there is the possibility of a hard freeze in the valley. None of this is all that unusual for September here though.

Speaking of wood, is the fellow whose photo you posted a couple of years ago or so still at work? He was the one who brought the logs to you for splitting. The photo is beautiful. Even when green still predominates, the addition of the russet and reds is welcome. And I must say — it’s good to see you’ve been out and about a bit!

I’ve lost track of that old fellow and I suspect he has finally quit driving. Haven’t seen his truck on the road for a long time now.
There are glimmers of Fall already but I suspect there will be a long Indian Summer before Fall and Winter really start.

At least your image scene is a little more enjoyable than mine outside my window.
(It’s grey, grey and more grey with continuous rain all this week – I almost feel as though it’s winter again in Melbourne. Aust.)

This is a very good trail but not one of my favorites except at the upper part near the peak. The fire situation still has a lot of areas where I usually hike closed off, but it won’t be long before the weather takes away the threat of fire.

There is also new snow on the high mountains in the park. So pretty.

We’ve got little sparks of fall here and there but nothing serious just yet. They say our foliage will be colorful but brief due to the ongoing drought. I hope you have a long, colorful season. Can’t wait to see the larches!

I’m looking forward to the Fall colors. Today was beautiful here with a touch of Fall in the air. There was steam coming off the river this morning and frost on the car windows.

We’ve had fairly hard frosts here in the foothills of Alberta for most of this week, and the Rocky Mountains were snow white this morning when I looked west.

Thanks Margie! It’s a little colder there than it is here. We’ve had just one hard frost and just a little white on one of the mountain ranges. It sure is a nice break from the hot summer that we had!

I’m more than ready for fall – it’s been hot and humid here. Just this week we got a break and temperatures are better, humidity moved out, and the nights are cool. My kind of weather!
