Montana Outdoors
I’ve heard of this flower (years ago) in crossword puzzles, but I never knew what it looked like. Great photos. Such detail.

Besides being pretty, it is used, particularly the flowers, to make a tincture for swellings, sprains, bruises and wounds. The whole plant is toxic though and cannot be used for internal use.

It always makes me wonder why so many plants are territorial when most aspects of the different places are similar.

Arnica has to be one of the top herbal remedies in my first aid drawer (and I’m using it morning and night at the moment). Fascinating to see the flower and plant. I’ve had many sprained ankles over the years and if one can get some arnica tincture or ointment on it immediately after injury, it virtually wipes out the bruising and swelling before it can gain hold. I’ve never used it on broken skin as it’s toxic, but my Father uses it any way he can and refuses to heed my warning not to use it on a broken skin.

It’s a favorite of mine too. I’ve not found anything else that works as well. A friend made me some tincture it is has been even better than the commercial brands.

I’ve made tinctures when studying Herbal Medicine in the early 1990s, but a layperson can’t buy the hospital grade alcohol so I used Vodka (which seemed to work just as well).

I don’t know if they sell it over there, but a brand of alcohol called “Everclear” is sold here in liquor stores at 190 proof. It is sometimes used by herbal product manufacturers to use when making tinctures.

The discussion above about the medicinal use was fascinating. “Arnica” seemed familiar, so I went looking, and discovered that it’s used for sprains and so on. There are so many useful plants around us. That they happen to be beautiful, too, is a real plus!

I use Arnica tincture, but I might have a problem making myself pick the flowers from which to make it.

How nice to see what Arnica looks like. I use Arnica cream whenever I have a bruise and wouldn’t be without it. Have used it for years. Lovely photos.

Very useful and very pretty too. I suppose these have been domesticated, but they are plentiful in the woods here this time of year.
