I found a fantastic orb weaver a few weeks ago. I still haven’t ID’d it, but it shouldn’t be terribly difficult, since it looks like it’s carrying the shell of a hermit crab for an abdomen! My photos aren’t the best, but I’m going to give the people at BugGuide a whirl. I nearly broke the poor thing’s web, walking into it. At least this one isn’t at ground level, and is more visible.
Spider webs are one of nature’s fascinations. There are only a few species of spider that I don’t care for because they are poisonous, but they have never bothered me. They actually remove a lot of insects that I do find annoying, and many spiders are very pretty.
