White on white
Today on a trip to get supplies, I encountered a section on the hills to the south of Flathead Lake where the trees were covered with a combination of snow and hoarfrost. The trees were white, the ground was white and the sky was white so there wasn’t much contrast, but the trees were beautiful and so I tried a few photos along a little road that left the highway and headed back into the reservation. I couldn’t drive the road today so I just hiked back in a ways. The road is very inviting and so on a sunny day I’ll go back in further with the Jeep and perhaps do better.

It was pretty light snow, but Nature did a nice job of decorating the trees.

I really like the first and third tree picture in this group, very unique and the fourth as well. I’m going to have to plan a trip home in the winter I think to view these types of scene’s again.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen hoarfrost and snow combined in this way. It’s just splendid. The trees remain defined in a way they don’t if they’re bearing a heavy blanket of snow, and even though it’s “all white,” it isn’t all white: there’s plenty of contrast between trees and snow-covered ground. I really like them. Picking a favorite’s impossible, but I do like the single trees, and the line of four trees that seem to be trudging up the hill.

There was about a hundred square miles of those trees, but I had little time…

I hope the birds have gone south! It’s beautiful, but looks cold and all the food is covered.Looks so clean, but in the case of Montana, I know that what’s under the snow is beautiful too.

The migrating birds have been long gone now. The residents seem to know how to survive!

I love coming across areas of trees like these. Don’t see them like that every year.

They may be white on white, but the images are still very effective with the dark of the foliage and trunks in contrast.
I particularly like the 4th image. Looks very steep terrain around the area. I just love the snow and mounting air in winter. There’s something so invigorating and refreshing in it’s crispness.

That tree just seemed to be proud of its decorations! The area in which these trees stand is about a mile above Flathead Lake and the terrain slopes down to the lake. Were the weather clear, the lake could have been seen in the background in some of the pictures.

How beautiful! We had our first snow last night, only an inch or so lying now, but magical to see. It brought a woodcock down as well, just yards from the house.

You photo of the Woodcock was really nice! I’ve only seen pictures of them. We are getting light snow again today, but not much piling up.

The photos are great, they are like pieces of art. I think the lack of contract in the sky just adds to the beauty and enhances the tree in this case. Love snow covered trees:)

Thanks Inger. Trees like these mesmerize me. I encountered some like this years ago on a mountain top and fortunately brought back a hundred pictures.

It’s not even ‘white on white’! For me there are endless shades of blueish grey and thousands of subtly mixed colors in it. Magnificent, and majestic!

Yes, the trees were really pretty that day. We have had snow off and on but not as much at a time. It was luck that I saw those trees when I did! It is fascinating how each tree was different, as though they were celebrating winter, each in its own way.

It was. We get just a few days each winter when the conditions are right for decorating the trees like that and I love to see them then.
