I wonder what winter will bring all of us this year. The water levels in the lakes and rivers around here are very low…

The water levels here are the lowest that I’ve ever seen. I hope for a big snow year, but with El Nino, I suspect it will be a warm and dry winter (relatively). I have been pleased though to see that the forests in the higher elevations, while dry, are not too bad. The small springs and seeps still have water flow and the trees and brush look pretty good. At the lower elevations, it is dry and brown though.

That’s good for the forests.. weather has been unpredictable lately.. California had so many fires and now they have flooding to contend with. All we can do is take it day by day… (:

It is two summers into a three summer renovation. The outside is a coat of white primer over rather extensive repairs, and the final coat will be done next summer along with a few other minor things and then it will be put into service as a rental. A couple of weeks ago I hiked on another mountain about ten miles away and the old cabin shone like a beacon with that new white paint!

It is. There are very few of the old cabins left. I hope this one will be respected by the motorcycle riders who now have been giver the right to use the trails near it, but I doubt that it will.

I think the clarity of the air at the higher elevations helps capture the true colors, as does the light angles that I try to use.

One of my good friends manned that lookout during the summer of 1966. He hiked with me the day of the photo.

You answered my question. Yes, it will be a rental. Wouldn’t that be an experience? Your comment about the cabin shining like a beacon made me smile. When I first saw the photo, it was a lighthouse that came to mind, before I focused on it. There’s a reason so many lighthouses are painted white!

The new paint makes a huge difference and makes it plainly stand out. I’ve been able to see it from many places far from it.
It would be enjoyable to stay there for a few days. I’d love to do that in the middle of winter or in very stormy weather.

It is pretty good, excellent for its original purpose of visibility of a certain section of the forest. The views are better from Baldy Mountain, about 10 miles away.

I’m not sure how they rent those. I would guess there would be a variety, but this one won’t be ready until next summer at the earliest, maybe the following year.

I think that’s why so many folks are willing to volunteer to man the remaining lookouts. There’s a guy who is stationed on one near here who has been there every summer for over a decade.
