Visit to a Waterfall
Every year, at some time during winter, I try to visit the waterfall that stands about a quarter mile from the northeast corner of Dog Lake (Rainbow Lake) on the Flathead Indian Reservation. I missed completely last year and for one reason or other didn’t make it this winter until today. Some of the ice still remains despite the warm temperatures, and today the sun was out and the sky was blue. A good day for a visit.

I was glad that at least some of the ice remained until I was able to visit. There was still a lot of ice below the falls, in fact I had to climb on an ice bridge that covered the stream below the falls to get the photos.

Love these, and the blue in the lake photo is wonderful. I’m curious: can you drink the water from the waterfall? It seems like it would be a cool drink of water …

I have never drank the water from there, but I think it would be OK. I know of nothing above the falls that would pollute the water. I’ve thought several times about hiking back in there but never have. It would be difficult because its quite cliffy and the brush if very thick.
The ice on the lake sure picked up the color of the sky, didn’t it. It was a bit of a surprise to see that it still remained. It didn’t appear to be thick enough to bear my weight though so I stayed on the shore.

Thanks! I love seeing this waterfall in its different moods throughout the seasons. For some reason it has not become well known and receives few visitors.

The lake and the falls are at about 4000 feet elevation, which is low enough to have had most of the snow melt. A couple thousand feet higher the snow is still deep.

How gorgeous these shots are! A lovely blue sky and frozen parts of a waterfall and a lake. It still seems so unreal to me. It’s so far away from what I have experienced growing up in Australia.

I feel the same when I see your photos from Australia. How many lifetimes would we have to have to see and fall in love with the vast diversity of the natural world all across our planet! I wish I were half a century younger so I could rear back and get a new start.

That would be very cold! The ice that I was standing on to take the photos was still about 4 inches thick.

Yes, we have had a very warm winter, which was nice in a way, but we are sadly lacking the snow pack that we should have going into spring. Our streams will suffer in late summer.

Wonderful weather. I love the contrast of the flowing water and the icy strands and crystal formation.

The waterfall did have a different look to it with both the water and ice. Usually I see one or the other but not both at once.

I love transitional photos, and you’ve offered us some glorious ones. Blue sky, ice, flowing water and the rocks make quite a combination. And doesn’t the lake look beautiful!

Going out and poking around in the forests always turns up something interesting and beautiful. Things here, with all of the various micro-climates are almost always in some stage of transformation. Yesterday I was driving the Jeep down a back road coming back out of a canyon on ice about 6 inches thick when I rounded a corner and found there was a wall of dust blowing across the road.

I have to confess that I did plan my visit on the morning of a clear day when the light would be good on that scene, and as luck would have it, it worked.

Thanks. I used slow shutter speeds for the waterfall photos. The first one was at 1/3rd second, the others were at 1/10th second. I used -0.7 EV for all of them and f/22 to f/29 and a circular polarized filter.
If you are interested, all of the photos I post are kept on Flickr. If you click on a photo it will direct you to that photo on the Flickr website and if you scroll on down you can click on EXIF data and it will show all of the camera settings for that photo.
