Montana Outdoors
When we drive through Montana, it’s the rivers and the rock formations that I notice most of all. I feel like getting out of the trailer and walking across the state so I can take pictures that I otherwise have to miss out on, except for glimpses in drive-by viewings. Such a beautiful state!

We lived for thirty years in the Arizona desert, and so the rivers and lakes are extra special to us here too. And I’m a trout fisherman so I get a lot of exposure to water scenes and the beauty of water and forest combinations.

That is the Clark Fork of the Columbia river near the little town of Plains, Montana, about 80 miles northwest of Missoula.

Reminds me of that TV series ‘Frontier House’ (?) set in Montana.

I’ve never seen weather like this here this time of year. It should be at least 10 degrees colder and the valley should have snow.

The river split in that area, one part went straight, the other wound around. The angle of the photo caught the curves.

This is nice for a few days, but we really need the cold temperatures again and the snow that goes with them. Fortunately, the high country is still retaining a lot of snow.

Yes, it is very odd. Seems to be averaging about 10 degrees warmer than usual. The little pond in the lower right though is still frozen over though and the ground is frozen below the top couple of inches.

While lots of people travel through that area, very few have ever seen that particular scene. Yesterday the light was just right when I was there and it made a pleasant scene with the sky turning the water so blue. Years ago I found that I could climb up into that cliffy area that is part of the National Forest and get some nice views and I visit once or twice a year. There is no trail other than wildlife trails there even though it is hardly what I would call remote.

Oh yes, we get most of our snow in February through April in the high country. There should be lots more!

We are regularly in the 40’s during the days now too. Very strange for January! There has been quite a bit of snow melt too below about 6000 feet.

This is one of the most unusual river views I’ve seen here. The blue is stunning. It looks like an unfurled ribbon of satin. And the trees around it are so straight. Actually, it looks a bit like a scene designed for a model railway — I can just see the little train chugging through there!

I’ve been up to that spot quite a few times and this was the first time the light was just right to make the river so blue. I’m glad that I saw it.
Actually, there is a rail line that runs right through there. The positions of the cliffs and trees hide it in the photo.

No, it sure doesn’t. There should be a lot more snow in the picture this time of year. We will need a lot more snow to fall here in order to have a good summer!
