You can tell it was cold by that mist on the river and I love following rivers when that happens. I can’t imagine a sky bluer than that one!

If the cold stays around a bit I’ll try to get better photos of the steam rising from the water, maybe a little earlier in the morning before the sun gets too bright. It’s really pretty.

It had just risen above zero when these were taken, but there was no wind. No warmth in the sun though.

Beautiful and pure, I bet it was really cold being co clear. You captured the coldness with the vapors rising off the ice.

It was indeed cold, but so crisp and clear that I had to go out and be in it. Compared to the air, that cold river was warm.

That Arctic air is cold and pure and about as blue as it can get. The cost of that beauty is sub-zero temperatures, but that’s OK.

I just never thought about the rivers steaming like that. It can happen on the bays here, but it takes a strong front and a sudden drop in temperature to make it happen. We call it “sea smoke,” and it’s fabulous. I’ve seen really significant instances four times in the past twenty years. The first time, we got a couple of inches of ice to go with it — not so nice!

I wasn’t aware of the steam off the bays. That would be dramatic. We see the steam off the river when the temp gets down near or below zero which usually happens when the Arctic air fronts move through. This morning it was complemented by big cakes of ice floating down the river.

Thanks Steve! We are getting some real snow finally and it is just beautiful! Supposed to get up to 10 inches tonight and I plan a hike for tomorrow once I get the house area plowed out. I’m hoping to enjoy the winter that I missed last year!
