Sky shadow

Upside down shadow

The sun was just above the horizon behind me and to my left. The fat blue line is the shadow of the contrail on the clouds above it.

  1. I’ve seen this ahead of the contrail, but not to the side. This is very cool! Thanks.

    • It takes a rather different situation for it to be so visible I guess. It was new to me.

  6. I’ve never seen anything like this. I’ve seen plenty of contrails and plenty of clouds — often together. But this? It’s really an unusual and special.capture. It’s a good reminder to look up now and then, too.

    • I’ve seen lots of them too, but the timing was just right on this combination. There doesn’t seem to be an end to new things is there!

    • It was lucky that I was close enough to a camera when the scene showed up.

    • That’s exactly what happened. And if the sky hadn’t been so pretty that morning I probably wouldn’t have looked at it.

  15. I don’t remember ever seeing this phenomenon, and you say it was your first time too. It’s comforting to confirm that new things can still come to us no matter how long we’ve been observing.

    • Thank you! I live in a very rural area and nature is always on display. It pays to be outdoors as much as possible!
