I never tire of seeing blue herons. They seem to be the epitome of poise and grace. Beautiful photo. Love its reflection in the water … and the sky meeting the water.
He looks like an extension of the rock outcropping. Good camouflage he has, as well as a good vantage point. He’s got some shelter from that breeze/wind, too. All in all, he’s clearly one smart bird!
I see them out of water on rare occasions, it is certainly the exception. They are almost always wading and hunting for food; you really got a unique shot.

I love seeing them too. They are fairly common here, but always enjoyed.

He’s got a great viewing spot! There must also be shallows nearby where he wades and hunts.

Yes, there are plenty of good places for them to hunt in that area. I think this guy was just enjoying the morning sun.

This photo was taken not too far from the town of Heron.

Whatever it was that brought him to that spot held him there giving me plenty of time for photos. When I left he was still there.

I loved the scene, Beth. Rather unusual pose for a heron.

The reflection was a bonus, with calm water near shore and wind out on the open river.

Yes, it was one of the few times I’ve seen them up above the water. I wonder what was on his mind other than just sunning himself perhaps.

I love herons, too. They seem so exotic and yet, they seem to be just about everywhere. They apparently adapt to all sorts of climates.

They sure are “all-around” type of birds. I remember seeing them so many times when I was just a kid. They are always welcome.
