Give a man a fish…
~ Give a man a fish and you’ve fed him a meal ~ Teach a boy to fish and he’ll have a fly rod in his hand the rest of his life ~
We have a large number of old photos around the house in boxes, folders, files, etc. and my wife and I decided to buy a scanner as a Christmas present to ourselves so we could get them scanned and sorted and into our photo library on the computer. This is the first attempt. It is a photo of myself at the age of 11 months, taken in May of 1942. I still have a fly rod in my hand during these summers now and I can even remember the day that photo was taken. (Still have the same haircut, too!)

The fish came from the West Fork of the Bitterroot. Photo was at our home in Missoula.

It will be interesting to see what-all might be in those old photos. The scene in that photo is probably my earliest memory, but there are others not far behind it.

Great idea to digitalize those old photos. We’ll be expecting some great memories shared on your blog. I like this one about the fishing rod. It’s so true too, about feeding yourself forever if you’re given the tools at an early age.

There have been many good meals over the years from the streams of Montana, Colorado and northern Arizona. One of the things I was most satisfied about when we moved back to Montana was the the fishing was still good in the river below our house!

As you know I love fishing, so this photo really hit me right between the eyes. It’s just great. Bet you haven’t changed hardly at all since you were 11 months old!

I knew you’d like it Bill! Something about fishing! Dad started me fishing very early and nothing much has changed since, certainly not in attitude!
You might enjoy a story I wrote about an event that happened just a few years later.

Are those diapers on the line? I miss clothes lines…can’t have them in my “hood”!

I would guess they are! There were two lines, one for the wash and one for the fish!

I’m sure that hiking to the places where you can use that rod is what has kept you fit as a fiddle!

Montucky, that photo is awesome! It sure was a sign of things to come — a little fellow who would grow up to love the great outdoors. I too have enjoyed scanning some of our old photos. Have fun with that project.

I guess some of us are like trees; we don’t go too far from our roots. Scanning these old photos sure does bring back memories!

What a terrific photo – and you answered the question I had when you said “one line for the laundry, one for the fish”. Those early experiences often set a course, don’t they? And such a good course it’s been!

They do. Both of our kids were introduced to the outdoors soon after they were born and both are still very close to the natural world.

Hi Montucky, Cute old snapshot. Your scanner is a useful tool. Have a tremendously nice rest of the day. By the way, I saw our first American Robins here today. Boy were they cold, too. It only got down to 31 here.

I’m glad the Robins are down there now. It will get colder still here for a long time yet. We have Chickadees, Juncos and lately a few Finches. Stay warm!

What a great shot. Love the hairstyle.
Even love the line full of nappies (as we call then in Australia).
I had great fun with my parent’s old B & W (and even some older sepia) images. Scanning them and trying to find who, what & where. Fortunately my Mother wrote on the back of many photos before she passed away in 2012.

Many of these photos have notes too, but not all. I will try my best to document all of the “who’s and whens and wheres”.

Haha, great photo! 🙂 Talking of fly fishing… it seems Colin has been bitten by the bug! He has had several rods given to him, and most of his Christmas presents were fishing-related. He’s itching to get started!

I bet he is! I’m also itching to get started even though our season here doesn’t start until mid-May.
I have a very old cartoon on a wall here, having cut it our of a magazine many years ago. It shows a guy wearing waders and holding a fly rod standing in front of the gates of St Peter. The caption is: “There must be a mistake! I’m a fly fisherman and I was supposed to go to Montana”!

Oh my gosh. This is great!!! Thank You presenting this valuable vintage photo. I have occasionally shot photos from our old photos and sometimes the result is good, but comparing with Your scanned photos, I guess that mine are worse. I have three vintage photos among my About me page. My favorite one is from me sitting in a pedal car. That photo is from 1948 and I was four years old. In our home there is also painting made from this photo.
