Montana Outdoors
You must have been really high up to take that photo. Those clouds look like you could almost walk on them.

I was raining that day in the valley below those clouds and I just hoped that it would be clear at the peak, 4550 feet above. It was, and I took a hundred pictures! THere is a road to the lookout and visitors are welcome there in summer when it is manned. They close the road about a mile from the lookout after fire season, but you can still hike up there. It does get quite a few visitors during the summer.

It was a very lucky day! While there I followed an old trail several miles into the roadless area along a high ridge. What a place it is!

It is indeed quite a feeling.This peak was easy to get to, others not so, but the feeling is almost the same. Sometimes you drift across the very narrow line between the completely rational and the spiritual. I understand why and how the ancient Indian tribes had sacred places.

The last time I climbed to see mist like that the sun came out and burned it away so fast that I was dumbfounded. I never knew that the sun could burn off fog that quickly.

I’ve seen that too. That low cloud layer was about 3000 feet thick and it was there for days. My timing for that trip was very fortunate!

It’s like a sea of clouds down there. I’ve never seen anything like that “live,” but maybe someday. Beautiful view, Terry…how fortunate for you.

The way this part of Montana is constructed, with low altitude valleys surrounded by tall and steep mountains, and the way our weather comes in from the Pacific creates more of this kind of weather than in most places. It’s sure enjoyable when you encounter it!

There is much of the “flying” feel to those peaks. While up on one of them it is not unusual to see small personal aircraft flying below the elevation where you are. In 2007 I photographed a huge forest fire from Baldy Mountains and have quite a few photos of the aircraft that was fighting that fire from above them.

Way off on the horizon, is that some early snow on that peak in the middle of the photo? Or something left over from last spring? I love the way your seasons so often appear to mix because of the varying altitudes.

I zeroed in on that white spot. It’s a large cloud that towers over the peak, probably to very top of a thunderhead, and it’s well over 50 miles away from where the photo was taken.
