Montana Outdoors
Does it ever get frozen enough to skate or walk on this lake,
or would that be unwise to ever try….

This lake is at a little over 4000 feet in elevation. Once the cold of winter hits it freezes and soon thereafter the ice is thick enough to support ice fishing (and skating if the snow doesn’t cover the ice too much). I’m glad that you mentioned skating. Our weather forecast is for clear, very cold weather, and if that holds, the ice should be clear and smooth and great for skating. I will remember to get my skates out and plan for a visit there in the next week.
When I took the photo the ice was thick enough to support my weight, although I stayed close to the shore) and after the next week of sub-zero night-time temperatures there will be ice fishermen on it. The cold waterfall in the previous post is only a few hundred yards from the lake itself.

I would have to have some heated clothes before I would consider going ice fishing or skating.
Although I think it would be great fun…
Snowy, icy winter weather is so beautiful, but too cold for me to experience (except through a window of a warm house)!

I was born here and grew up with the attitude of ; “It’s bitter cold and icy and snowy outside, so let’s go play in it”. I wish, just once, that you could experience that. Of course, sitting by the wood stove in the living room and looking outside at the snow and ice and the beauty of winter isn’t all that bad either!

It’s amazing how, once it gets started, a lake can freeze over so fast. I saw ice fishermen here yesterday on a local pond, but no snow yet. it might be a great year for skating.

Yes, it’s amazing how quickly lakes can freeze. We are getting some very cold weather now and there will be some ice forming on the river edges too in the next few nights.

I follow the blog of a woman who lives on a houseboat in Yellow Knife. She recently posted about the “flash freeze” of their lake. There are some amazing photos here of her skating on the smooth, snow-free ice. It looks like you’ve been blessed with the same thing – although from what I see of the weather, you may have some real snowflakes heading your way. I especially like the combination of frosty trees and muted sky with the lake. It’s not as dramatic as some of your snow photos, but my gosh, it’s beautiful.
I even turned on my snow to see how it looks – it looks great! I wish I could turn on snow in Houston so easily!

My, that’s some beautiful ice! We rarely see it that clean here, but perhaps in the upcoming cold spell we will. It’s supposed to be -9 tonight and -13 for the next two nights with no snow. I’ve got a knee problem at the moment or I’d have my skates out!

WOW, that’s just gorgeous. Looks as though winter has finally come, even here in sunny CA where we have gone from a high of 70 to 50 in a matter of days. Hard freezes the next few nights. Definitely cold for us and hard on many of the crops. Stay warm and keep ramblin there’s so much beauty out there.

Yes, perfect choice! Your comment above about growing up there and just going outside to play in the cold, ice, and snow reminds me of my childhood growing up here in PA. I spent a lot of time outside playing in winter because snow was just so much fun. And coming inside after getting red-cheeked and chilled to the bone for a nice hot cup of hot chocolate was like icing on the cake!

I get most of the local news from a TV station website. Today there was a story by a meteorologist about the dangers of cold, especially wind chill, advising peoplle to stay inside to avoid hypothermia. The next story was about snowmobile trails.

Oh gosh, Montucky, don’t get me started! I just love how the weather people/media try to scare the pants off of us about impending winter storms. Good grief! What did people do before TV warned us to go gobble up all the milk, bread and toilet paper at the grocery store? People survived and dealt with it, that’s how. We’ve become a nation of pansies. Sorry for the rant, but I just listened to all the dire warnings about a winter storm coming our way this morning with possible icy conditions. Oh surprise, it’s winter in western PA [sarcasm].

Hi Montucky, Excellent photograph of the frozen body of water. I recall watching Lake St. George where I used to live, freeze over slowly in the depths of the TN Winter. Interesting to see. Glad I live in 76 degree weather now (wore shorts and a tee shirt today here). Have a great Thursday tomorrow!

I was surprised to see the thickness of the ice. It’s amazing how quickly water can freeze. A week ago I was hunting and drove an old road in my Jeep. I had been over it the week before and splashed through a pool about a foot and a half deep. This time the pool was frozen clear to the bottom.
