I always include extra time for things like this! Last spring on the way there I made a small detour and encountered a moose.

Wonderful!!! I’ve seen this in Montana, minus the rainbow, but couldn’t do justice to the scene with a photo. You’ve done a great job of capturing the feel of the weather, whatever it decide to do.

Thanks Teresa! That’s a big area of sky there and it seemed to be just full of action. There was a gale force wind blowing when I took the picture.

The mountains are wonderful, but I’m coming to love the prairies. This is a beautiful photo, and makes me “homesick” for the Kansas I so recently visited. The play of shadows over the hills, the interaction of land and sky, is thrilling.

I like them too. The area in the photo is a relatively small prairie about 20 miles from my home. I have always liked it and it is the home some of my favorite flowers, the Bitterroots.

I love watching storms from a distance when I am in open country.
Here in the woods, the weather it is sort of a mystery … the tall trees do not allow you to see what is coming.

Storms are very dramatic when viewed in open country, or from a high mountain vantage point which also expands the range of vision. I love both!

The topography of western Montana is quite varied.This photos was taken only about 12 miles from my house. Just a few miles to the left of the photo stands 7400 foot tall Baldy Mountain where some of my high mountains photos were taken. About 80 miles past the rainbow is Glacier Park.

Yes, wasn’t that light something? I couldn’t have imagined it any better! Turned out, only a little rain and some high wind were the results of that storm, at least where I was able to see anyway.

As I proceeded further toward the rainbow it became larger and brighter and I almost was able to get a shot of a Bald Eagle against the rainbow. That one would have been great!

We have prairies in Texas, but we don’t seem to get weather like what you show here (unless you throw in the occasional tornado that makes its way here).

A lot of the variety of weather here is caused by the mountains and the extreme elevation changes that the weather fronts encounter as they flow over us from the coast. Many times I have watched waves of clouds change shape and even density as they rise up-slope over a mountain peak. It’s wonderful to watch!
