Ah, the Bull River! One of my favorite places. What trail did you hike in the CMW?

Trail 646 to St Paul Lake. Had it all to myself. Still some nice snow banks on the face of St Paul Peak.

Can’t wait to come to Montana again this October. It’s such a beautiful state! I’ll be taking lots of pictures to drool over when I get back home. Meanwhile I’m really enjoying yours.

It was a good trail, 4 miles to the lake with a 1600 foot vertical climb, but through beautiful country. I will post a lot of photos of the trail and the lake to give folks an idea of what that area is like. It is true wilderness.

Hello Terry, I generally try not to do envy but your wide open spaces and wilderness make that increasingly difficult! And you’ve captured it beautifully, it’s easy to see why you want to spend time exploring it.

Now this ain’t no bull: that is one of the prettiest areas in W MT! I have happy memories of floating around in Bull Lake on a sunny summer day. I sure do miss Montana. Glad you are getting out and about and posting these lovely photos, Terry.

So pretty…that meadow looks like a basin or part of a lake where the water didn’t make it this year…such rich greenness. And that’s a good kind of tiredness, too…after seven hours on the trail. How wonderful for you! 🙂

That is just the plain along the Bull River, but there are miles of it and it’s all beautiful.
I felt so good about the hike, especially when I got to the really steep part and the knee felt good like first gear- low range in the Jeep! I know now I can continue on the back country trails!

This is the part of Montana that gets the most amount of annual precipitation and it shows, doesn’t it! It gets very white in winter!

Well, it certainly shows that it has plentiful precipitation … I think I’m “thirsty” for green these days, as my home city, Vancouver BC, just set the record for BC’s driest July, without any rainfall, since 1937. Many brown areas …

We have also had a very dry July, but just last night we received a half inch of rain and that has made quite a difference. In our higher areas, especially in the northwest part of the state it stays fairly wet and if there is any rain around it will be there.

That whole area is covered with lush vegetation, including thick forests just off the valleys and well forested mountains (except the rocky peaks).
Well, an hour and a half was used taking pictures.

The valleys in that region are quite small, but they are beautifully green in summer.

I caught that little passing mention about your knee. I hope you haven’t been having trouble with it. I can’t think of much in the world that would be worse than you, not able to make your wonderful hikes! We benefit, of course – but your joy in your surroundings is obvious and infectious.

Thank you for your concern. One day early in July I did have a very painful problem on a hike. It has since worked out and I can hike OK with only a little pain. THe hike to St Paul Lake was a test for me because it is a moderately strenuous hike, 8 miles with a 1600 foot vertical. I did fine with only a little pain, but the good part was the knee felt good during the tough climbing parts! Now just more work for it!
