Montana Outdoors
I heard that was a winter of very heavy snowfalls and blizzards. Good to hear that it’s milder this year.

It was a good winter here. I prefer heavy snowfalls, for the moisture that will carry over to the following summer. Of course, the area in which I live is well protected by mountains and has a climate much milder than most of Montana.

That’s good. I think it’s much harsher on the prairie part of the state. Very windy and nothing to break it.

I used to hunt Antelope on land owned by a Hutterite Colony just outside of Harlowton and got to know many of them quite well and listened to their stories. In that flat, always windy place, winter can be just brutal. It would be difficult for me to tolerate it, but they have plenty of things that have to be done and seem to do well with it.

I wouldn’t want to live there year round, but the prairies have a beauty of their own in any season that isn’t winter.

We had drought conditions for the last two months of summer (and the wildfires that go along with it) and I’m glad that it has been broken. The rain has been beautiful, but rather cold: I love the warm summer rains! Rain is still in the forecast for the next couple of weeks. I wish it would turn to snow and let real winter settle in.

Yes, it is. When my folks got up in years my sister and I were living in Arizona and we wanted them to come down there so we could all be together. THey wanted to for that, but my Dad said he just could never leave these mountains. I understood and know exactly how he felt.

Thats a beautiful shot. We’re getting some snow here this morning, but then it’s expected to be 60 degrees by Monday. I guess I’d better get out there with the camera.

The forecast here is for some heavy snow above 4500 feet. I can see higher than that on the mountains and if it starts to really pile up maybe I can get up and enjoy some of it.

Gorgeous. Hope to see this kind of scenery soon. It is interesting to look at scenes from year to year and see the differences. We are so funny in our need to have everything remain constant.
More rain here in Northern CA today and snow in the Sierra above 7000, which is pretty high. But it’s moisture and we will happily take all that mother nature offers.

I follow the weather in northern California (our daughter lives in Santa Rosa) and I know you have been getting some good heavy rain. I’m not all that fond of that much rain, but those heavy snows in the high mountains are wonderful for the country!

It has been staying mostly above normal temperatures here too. Usually we have snow on the ground by this time of the year. I remember though one year when I was a child when there was no snow until Christmas Eve when we got 4 inches. All of the kids were worried that Santa wouldn’t come!

I was very pleased to see the health of the beaver community. There is a small logging road that runs for a ways through that canyon and a few years ago the beavers flooded it and got themselves into big trouble. This time I was overjoyed to see that along the edge of their ponds nearest the road had been re-engineered to accommodate a ditch several hundred yards long that protected the road from the ponds and the ponds from the road and everybody seems to be happy with the new arrangement.

On the left side of the photo is the Cherry Peak roadless area which contains 5 peaks that are over 7000 feet high. On clear days they make their presence known!

We are getting some pretty good snow now at the higher elevations, and now it should stay for the winter. I got up into some of it today and it’s nice to see!

It’s hard to focus on the overall world climate situation with all of the local fluctuations. Over the years I have seen many cold wet winters and also many warmer, dryer ones. Some of the scientific studies are a bit scary though.

It will happen. Our home is at about 2400 feet and strictly from here it looks like a warm but wet season with off-and-on cold fronts moving through. 3000 feet higher however, it’s a different story. In cloudy conditions, that’s normally about a 10 degree difference. So far this year we are just on the edge but wait until January!

This is so lovely! I hear you on needing more snow though. We had the driest summer and fall on record. It seems the drought is contining. Would love to get some snow to build the water table back up.

We had a very dry summer too, then suddenly it started to rain nearly every day. The trees should have gotten a good drink by now just in time for winter. THere’s cold temps and snow in our forecast for the weekend. Out high country has done well so far for snowpack.
