If there’s any chance – ANY! – of him running out of sunflower seeds, you just let me know and I’ll send a St. Bernard with a cask full of seed for him. What a cute guy!

He will have plenty of seeds. We keep them out for the birds. The chipmunks are sleeping now and so he will just take their place at the table.

I think he has figured out that I will not harm him and allowed me to be close, but only for a couple seconds at a time while he got some seeds. That was the NIKON 70-200mm VR lens; it does a nice job!

THese little guys are common in the forests here, but for some reason they haven’t visited our house very often. This one might stay around for the winter.

Great photo! I love squirrels … I feed a couple on a wall between where I live and the neighbours – I watch them out the kitchen window. Found some hazelnuts under trees here and that’s been their regular fare for the last weeks, which they really seem to enjoy!

In the larger cities in Montana gray squirrels have been introduced (they are not native to this area) and you see a lot of them. They get pretty tame. This one is quite wild and I will not try to make him tame other than he will get used to seeing me,

Yes, that is a similar situation with the introduced grey and black squirrels here in Vancouver, BC. The squirrel near my home is wild and scared of me, but will tolerate me watching through the window; but in a park nearby, they are quite tame as well.

We will have plenty of seeds and I will find some kind of nuts that are a little more substantial for him to have on occasion, although he is used to mostly berries, pine seeds and mushrooms.

He is! From what I’ve seen, he is also planting sunflowers all over the place, even more than the chipmunks do. I hope his memory os good!

I would like him to stay around too. I know squirrels can create problems, but not so much here, and he will share the seeds with the small birds too. He is just plain cute!

I love squirrels. We don’t see too many red squirrels here-mostly gray. I’ve wondered if the larger grays beat up on the reds because the reds seem to only be in small groups of a few here and there. i see reds in the woods, but I think the grays own suburbia.

Grays are not native to Montana but there are good sized populations in most of the larger cities (transplants). They seem to be friendlier than the native Reds and do well in the cities, probably because people provide plenty of food for them. The Red squirrels are much smaller and adapted to eating pine seed and berries since we don’t have acorns or any of the larger nuts as native plants.

I’ve seen the reds here in Vancouver, along with the grays and blacks, the imports. I find that the little red squirrels run a lot faster; maybe because they have to be more on the alert with the more dominant gray and black squirrels.

All indications are that he will winter here and we will enjoy having him! There will be food to supplement his natural foraging and it is a fairly safe place for the small birds and animals. We have left most of our property in its natural state so there is plenty of fairly thick brush and trees for shelter for them.

I would bet that these are a sub-species of the Red Squirrel. They are quite dark in color and not friendly in the sense that they don’t usually live around people. Sure pretty little folks though!

I have thought that he was a very busy squirrel or that there were two, but today my son said he saw two at one time although they were not right together. Perhaps that explains why the squirrel would permit me to get quite close one time and not the next, too.

He has decided to stay here this winter. He has been as busy as can be building a winter nest and stocking it with sunflower seeds. It will be fun to watch him this winter!
