Pear Lake, Blossom Lakes ~ Evan’s Gulch Roadless Area (1)
For many years I have found it to be true that one of the best parts of an outdoor experience is the night before it starts, and last night’s stay at the Blossom Lakes trail head before today’s hike to Blossom Lakes and Pear Lake in the Evan’s Gulch Roadless Area was not an exception.

Today’s trip was one of those “150 photo” trips and this is the first of a series of posts about the trip and that area of western Montana.

I was amazed at how stratified those clouds were. I took over a dozen photos and they were all different as the scene changed. That’s when it gets very difficult to decide which to post!

One of my favorite hiking spots. I’m headed to Cubeiron / Silcox in a couple weeks and just may have to stop off here.

Well, the trails are good. The one between upper Blossom Lake and Pear lake has a few down trees over it, but they are not a problem. Pear Lake has fairly good snow banks still around and the high point before you go down to the lake had small, icy snowbanks spread around all over.
I haven’t been over to the Cube Iron/Silcox area yet this year. I hope the trail crew has been working in that area.

It seemed rather unusual, as sunsets often do when seen from the high ground. I wish I could capture more of them from the mountain tops!

The difference between you and me is that, when you see such a magnificent sunset, you can capture both the sight and feel of it. I’m curious – I found a map of the area on Roadlessland.org and see a very short road coming off Prospect Creek Road in the NE corner of the area. Is that where your trailhead is?

The trail head for Blossom Lakes is exactly where the Prospect Creek road (or Montana highway 471) crosses the state line into Idaho. I think the road that you are seeing is actually on the Idaho side and leads to the trail head for Revett Lake. In fact, I drove up there after hiking yesterday just to see the trail head and met a woman there who had just come back from a hike to that lake and she said it was beautiful up there too. Now it’s on my list too for later although it’s not in the roadless area and only a couple miles up from the trail head.

Beautiful I like the rays coming through the clouds. Crepuscular rays they’re called, and can be tricky to get a decent shot of.

It reinforces my feeling that one should spend as much time as possible in the outdoors. For one thing it increases the chances of being in such a place at the right time!

Yes, digital is a huge factor! Some folks think I’m nuts for carrying that big heavy camera on the trails, but you never know when a great opportunity will present itself.

Thanks! It is a scene worth remembering. I am so grateful that I have a camera that can capture that kind of image. It was a rare opportunity, and I will post several other images taken as the scene changed. It’s hard to choose.

Earlier in its progress the sky had more bright oranges, then as it moved on the other colors came out. I hope you have an excellent day too!
