Montana Outdoors
Gorgeous! We were just out exploring around the Cabinets on the 4th! Didn’t get to do near as much hiking as I’d hoped, we wound up tooling around in the jeep much more than we’d expected (it was super fun anyway). Can’t wait to get back over there soon!

Hello, Francis! It is about 10 air miles just about due north of the town of Plains. Baldy mountain can be seen from Hwy 200 near Plains and the lake is just below the peak on the east side. There is a good but fairly aggressive Forest Service trail to it from the trail head near Corona Divide. To get to the trail head, take Forest Service road 1025 out of Plains toward Corona Divide, then turn onto USFS road 886 for about 3 miles to the trail head. The trail is 2 – 21/2 miles long but climbs 1,500 feet to the peak and then continues on down to the lake. The trail is suitable for foot traffic only.

I hike up there several times each year and it’s always a little different depending on weather conditions. I have some photos taken there a few years ago on June 25 and it was covered with about two inches of new snow.

That’s beautiful! It looks like a lake you could have all to yourself, but also looks like it might be a little cold.

Occasionally someone will visit the lake and fish there but it’s very seldom. Quite a hike from the peak down to the lake and back up again after a climb of 1500 feet to get to the peak in the first place.

What a beautiful view. The sky and light look like this might have been taken on the same day as your previous photo – and look at all that snow! I still remember a childhood vacation when I got to make snowballs at the side of some Colorado pass in the middle of July. I don’t think I quit talking about that for a year.

There’s plenty of snow for snowballs up there right now! Actually, some of the snow banks are frozen so hard that I was barely able to kick toe-holds in them so I could climb over.

Yes, the two photos were taken less than an hour apart on July 5th. They are two of over 50 that I brought back. I will do a post soon with more photos from the trail on the way up, hopefully to give a feel for what the hike is like.

I get up there as often as I possibly can. I’m kind of stuck at the moment with a remodeling project, but when it’s finished I will be getting out a lot more before the snow comes again. I hope to use the years that I have left this way.

Great view. That lakes looks like a beautiful place to hike to. I bet it is crystal clear and clean … mostly undisturbed by human hands. Does anything live in such a cold lake?

The lake is indeed pristine and it does have fish in it, although I’ve heard they are small ones. Only a few folks visit there every summer. And that’s another thing I love about the roadless areas. You very seldom see any trash at all up in them or any disturbance to the natural beauty.

I think a lot of it is, and maybe because of all of the rain we’ve had. The snow banks on the lee sides of the ridges are still holding a lot of water though. They are as hard as rocks from the thaw/freeze cycles. I’d say the big one on the north side of Baldy is just about normal for this time of year, and there was still a snow bank over the trail just above the tree line, which is about the same as in past years.

I spent the night of the 4th at the trail head at 5900 feet and it was in the 30’s in the morning. The top of the mountain is at 7,464 feet. The tallest peaks around are all at about the same elevation and so you can see a long ways from any of them.

It sure is, and yet it’s surprising how few local people ever get up into those areas. Most are content to view them from the valley (and some simply cannot make the hikes), but in my opinion they are missing a lot.

It was cool up there. I wanted to get a very early start, which I did and the temperature at the trail head at about 5:30 was in the 30’s, comfortable. But a half mile up there was a biting wind and it would have been very cold but for the warmth caused by the exertion of the climb. Even at the top at about 8:00 the sun felt good.
