In this area at least, black butterflies are quite uncommon and this one caught my attention immediately. It was the first I’ve seen.

I agree it is a beautiful little creature! From what I’ve read about them they are not really rare at all, although their distribution is not widespread in the US. This is the first I’ve seen.

Isn’t it pretty! I thought that orange was pollen in the smaller shot. I have never seen one, obviously.

I thought that was pollen too until I loaded the photos to the computer. Now I wonder of it was designed to imitate pollen and if so, why.

Don’t you love it when you encounter something like that? I was excited that it stayed put long enough for me to get a photo, and I had to change lenses at that.

At first look, I thought for sure that was pollen, but it’s fur or hair or whatever it’s called on butterflies. I’d bet thought that it is an imitation of pollen for some reason.

Perhaps it escapes predation by suggesting “bee” to birds that might be inclined to eat the Forrester.

I was thinking that too. Those orange leg warmers look very much like the pollen you see on bumble bees.

What a striking creature! I just was thinking – do you suppose there’s some connection between all the unusual flowers you’re seeing this year and the unusual butterflies and such? Perhaps some of these have symbiotic relationships and appear together.

I don’t know. I’ll have to think about that! I know though that timing has much to do with encountering flowers and critters as well, and I’ve noticed that this year I have visited many places at a different time than in the past. I remember that the last time I visited Reservation Divide it was late July instead of the last of June; the huckleberries were ripe then and they are green now.

What a handsome, fuzzy, furry critter1 I’ve never seen anything like him/her. Looks like he/she is decked out for a colder climate.

It is cooler up there where this little one lives, probably an average of 10 to 15 degrees cooler than in the valleys. The color might just be to draw in more daytime heat.

This adorable little Six-spotted Forester Moth was just staring at me through our back door screen. I immediately ran to my computer to find out what he was. I live in Northern New Jersey at the very top – on the Delaware River. We’ve lived here ten years and never seen one before.

My hiking buddy and I found one in Wolf Creek Canyon off the Snake River in Jackson Hole (07/21/2013). First for both of us! I managed an average image. The above is a great image and thanks for helping ID our find!
