Montana Outdoors
Love it! I have seen ducks do that, but not geese.

Yes, same here. These were near the shore on the Clark Fork River, and there must have been something hatching below the surface. There were several groups of geese doing it.

It pays to always have a camera handy. This is the first time I can remember seeing geese do that.

Thanks! I nearly always carry about 7 pounds of camera and lenses around with me, but it often pays off.

There was certainly something there. In that general area there were dozens of geese on the water, and most were feeding like that. I don’t know if these were migrating geese or locals: we have quite a few that wil stay the winter here, some years.

Hi Montucky, Yes, I agree! I rarely see the deep dive position – usually the geese graze on shore or just poke their head down in very shallow water. Have a great day! Excellent photo!

I learned only recently (within the last year or so) that ducks which do this are called “dabblers”. It’s an interesting bit of knowledge, suggesting that dabblers in art, writing, photography and such aren’t casual at all – they’re the ones willing to look beneath the surface!

That’s a good point! I was familiar with dabbling ducks, but I’ve never seen geese do it before. There must have been something good there.

We haven’t had as many geese here this summer, I think because the extended period of high water in the streams altered their usual nesting areas. Maybe that had something to do with their behavior now too.
