It’s something we have to keep in mind here when hiking this time of year. The temperature when the first photo was taken was in the 20’s and there was a stiff wind. For the second it was calm and about 50.

Great shots. I’ll probably regret saying this when I’m freezing my bottom off on a mountain trail, but I am looking forward to the winter.

It sure is. The cool air is delightful and I love seeing bits of fog hugging the canyons and the ravines on the mountainsides.

I am often critical about Montana people, but they have one attitude that I applaud: “when it’s cold and snowy and icy and windy and just plain nasty outside, lot’s go out and play in it”!

With hunting season about to start next week, this was indeed a good reminder. A warm sweater under a poncho really felt good up there, and it would have been miserable without!

Beautiful! We got the first snow in the high country here this past weekend. Should be a great display with the larches at their peak.

That felt like winter. THere was a pretty good wind, and just up the trail a bit from there it was freezing rain.

That’s fairly common here, and something I like very much. THe elevation difference between the two photos was about a mile too.

Off to the right in the first photo the ground drops off about a thousand feet and the view on a clear day is over 50 miles. Being there on a day like that produces a somewhat warm feeling for me, as though the clouds are a soft curtain all around.

On a clear day one tends to concentrate on seeing what’s down below there. On a cloudy day, the mind remembers and wonders, a completely different feeling. It’s also awesome to see a snow storm from above it.

It sure can be, especially at the higher elevations. We’ve had night time temps in the 30’s here in the valley this past week and I’m sure in the 20’s up high.
