Montana Outdoors
It is looking at You very carefully and knowing that someday You’ll publish photo from it. 🙂 Very nice close-up photo with beautiful colors. It was cold, I see. We have had here for long time rainy and cold and just for one day (today) they say that the weather is climbing up 20 ºCelsius / 68 ºFahrenheit.

We have had unseasonably warm weather lately, but it will be changing soon. Our nights will be in the 30’s (F) and the days in the 50’s for awhile yet before winter comes.

He was curious because he wasn’t sure just what I was doing and stayed put because I was just outside of his personal space. (Thankful for zoom lenses!)

….well, it looks like a bright and dry 32 degrees, so was probably quite nice! Just the kind of morning to keep a Chipmunk focused on gathering goodies to stash away for winter.

It was exactly that. I love mornings like it! We’ve had a pretty good amount of berries around this year and those plus the sunflower seeds we put out for the birds and munks should have provided him a full larder.

Cute! Chippie’s cousin, the ground squirrel or “gopher”, has already gone to bed for the winter, in late August! They retire when the grasses “cure” and food supplies become scarce. The chipmunks must have a more varied diet to be able to stay aboveground so much longer.

Our chippies stay out into December if the snow doesn’t get too deep. Then they retire for a couple months, coming out upon occasion, perhaps for water and then sleep until spring.

I can totally relate to sitting in the sun on a chilly fall morning. There isn’t much better, unless it’s sitting in the sun on a clear winter morning overlooking a mountain meadow dusted in snow.

yep, i can relate. every pot i have planted this fall has been destroyed. our ground is so hard they can’t dig so i guess they think they will find their nuts in pots this winter… i have sad news for them… the pots will be emptied and stored!!

Thanks Bill! We’ve had too much sunshine for the last couple of months (our hot season). Now we’re in a period of cooler, wetter weather and it is refreshing for a change. Even a little snow in the offing!

If this critter were in my yard, he would be stealing the sunflower seeds I put out for the cardinals, nuthatches and chickadees.

They certainly are characters, but they are sure fun to watch. They still damage things, but we have been able to mitigate that somewhat by what we do; for example, we don’t plant ice plant because they will gobble that up in a matter of days.

Am on a PAINFULLY slow DSL line while visiting my sister-in-law in Pennsylvania… wanted to stop by for a longer visit but do not have the patience for how slowly the pages are loading here… I’ll be home as of Tuesday for the foreseeable future so will come back for a longer visit then.
Meantime, spotted this image and wanted to congratulate you on it because no matter how hard I try, I so far have no really good images of these guys… no patience to wait for them to be still for the camera and they ALWAYS seem to run away from me! The light and his pose are just marvelous!

I know what you mean about DSL. The connection that I have is not fast at its best. You have been out on a long trip, long enough that it will fel good to get back home I’d think!
This little guy was enjoying the first sun of the day and because I was just beyond his personal space he indulged his curiosity and just watched me. It’s called “luck”.
