Frozen waterfall

Frozen waterfall at Rainbow Lake

Having failed to remember to visit this place during winter the last two years, I remembered today and loaded my camera gear and snowshoes (which I didn’t need) into the Jeep and headed out. The lake is only about a dozen miles from home, and there is a short walk of a half mile or so from the highway to the fall. I naively tied a tripod to my pack (for a long exposure), thinking that most of the fall would still be running: it was, but behind the ice! I was very pleased to see a few rays of sun filtering through the trees onto the ice.

    • I’ve not drank from this particular stream, but I have from many remote streams when I hike in summer. Yes, cold and pure. When I was a kid there were small springs and streams along the highways through the National Forests at which there were turnouts for people to stop. There were signs of “Drinking water” and usually a water pipe with running water available for the traveller. Sadly, nearly all no longer exist. I still trust the water in most places in the back country though.

  3. You are such a dedicated photographer. Snowshoes? Tripods on your pack? Your photos show your commitment.

    • This was an unusual occasion, when I specifically went after some photos, and if I had not had a camera I would have gone there anyway. I usually go where I do simply to be out there and started carrying a camera a few years ago to bring back pictures of what I saw for my wife to see. I know I probably should concentrate more on my photography to enhance the technical quality of the photos.

    • The weather conditions must have been just right for quite a period of time to produce the definition of the waterfall. Often they become just one hue solid sheet of ice.

    • Yes, so very different. I know that I could not exist again in an urban environment. Many years ago when we lived in the Phoenix area, my folks were getting up there in age and we wanted them to come join us there. Now I understand my Dad’s comment when they decided not to: “We just cannot leave these mountains”.

  6. Hi Montucky, The waterfall being frozen is a sight I have never seen in person so I am glad you digitally captured the image and shared it here. Have a really nice day today and stay warm!

    • This is just the top 10 – 15 feet of the waterfall. I zoomed in on it because there was a little sunlight playing on it. A little later I will post a few more photos of it and one that was taken last summer of the same waterfall. It’s a rather difficult place for photography because the bottom is surrounded by very thick and unruly brush.

  7. I love this! I’ve never seen such a sight! The water was still running underneath the ice? Amazing!

    • I thought when I started out that the fall would be running with ice along the edges and therefore took a tripod so I could use a long exposure time to smooth the water. When I got closer and was unable to hear the water I was concerned that perhaps there wasn’t enough water to sustain the waterfall. It was nice to see the ice and see that the water was falling as usual, but behind the ice. There must have been just the right weather conditions for quite some time to create that. There are lots of places where there exist what looks like frozen waterfalls, but they are really simply accumulations of ice from very small seeps and trickles of water where small drops build up over time, but those are very different than this one which is a true waterfall.

  10. I am glad you went this year. The frozen is just beautiful.

You are way ahead of us in the winter weather department. Our ground isn’t even covered, and most of the lakes are still open.

    • We haven’t gotten the amounts of snow that were forecasted, but enough for a white Christmas. We’re having some cold nights for awhile, but that’s OK.

    • Yes, there are some pretty scenes here if you know where they are. This waterfall has no sign to identify it, only a very poor trail leading to it and doesn’t even have a name. One of my cousins mentioned one time that there was one in that general area and I went looking for it.
