    • Thanks SuzieQ. This scene developed behind me as I was hiking on a trail that was mostly in the trees. I just glanced back and saw the strange weather pattern. (The day turned out to have a few brief periods of sunshine with winds on the high ridges and the sky spitting little bits of snow at times. Temperature in the mid-thirties.)

  2. It is not very often around here. Elevation about 300′ to 600′ above sea level that we ever get to look down on fog, mist whatever but as a pilot I have sometimes been between cloud layers and it is always a magnificent and awe inspiring situation.
    Great shot thank you.

    • I always love getting above and into the clouds too. The valley floor down there is 2,400 feet and this was at about 3,600 feet. The photo in a sense plays a trick on the eye. The dark clouds at the top are actually lower than the ones that appear to be in the middle. I love the way the clouds relate to the mountains!

  3. well i guess a good bet would be partly to mostly cloudy…which type of cloud might depend on your elevation though!

    • Exactly! It was interesting to pass through the valley clouds into the next layers.

    • In my experience it has been fairly rare to see three distinct levels like these.

    • It was, and it is. Today I was on a trail in the trees and didn’t have the long views, but the swirls of the wind and the sounds of it in the trees made up for that!

    • In summer, there surely would have been a rainbow, but not on that day.

    • Yes, it was chilly on the ridge tops. The ambient temp was in the mid 30’s, but the wind was coming from higher peaks that were snow capped.

    • It was for a moment. The weather changed several times, but none of the changes were warm.

    • It was a very unusual cloud pattern. The season changes here produce all kind of interesting cloud activity. Today we had snow falling at low elevations and on the high ridges there was an icy wind with a little sun peeking through the clouds. (The slight warmth of the sun didn’t overcome the ice in the wind!)
