Trail 450 to Mt Headley starts here and is hidden by the ground cover.

This was just a day hike but it would be nice to camp at the lake. I plan on a couple overnight trips yet this summer. I’ve also decided to start driving up to the trail heads in the evening and camp there for the night, giving me an early start on the trail next morning. I wish I had done that on today’s hike. Because of the drive I didn’t start on the trail until 9 AM and got back to the Jeep after 3 PM. It was cooler up there, but still I hiked in the heat of the day.

Love the last photo. And those puffy-whitish things, what are they? (I may have missed the mention of what they are.) Very intriguing, they are, as I don’t recall seeing anything like this in the mountainous woods of long ago (of course, I hadn’t been as far up North to Montana either). 🙂

That’s Bear Grass, Anna. It grows only in the western states. Here is a post from about a year ago that shows more of it.

Those shots are just above the lake a bit. The trail goes up higher then drops down to the lake. It really is a bright and colorful place!

There are some pretty steep mountainsides there as well as some pretty tall cliffs. Still, it’s worth the hike.

You know I love the wildflowers, and a path leading any where. Did the trail lead up the steep incline in the second from the last shot?

That’s another four miles of trail that leads up to a peak called Mount Headley. In a few more days I will post some photos from there.

A friend who works for the Forest Service suggested this trail and I loved it! There are four or five more lakes in the general area, but those are too far for day hikes. Next trip up there I’ll have a heavier pack!
