This week I will be having a wonderful time hiking into some favorite areas and some new ones with a good friend. Later there will be time for more photos from those trips, but for now, here is a sample from today’s hike to Cabin Lake in the Cube Iron – Silcox roadless area in the Cabinet Mountains of western Montana.

This was a very nice trip and I’m glad we did it. It’s a beautiful area. Today we hiked to a peak four miles above it.
There’s no cabin, but just a little above the lake level is a small flat spot that would be perfect for a tiny cabin. A backpack tent will have to do though.

It was a beautiful trip and I will certainly post more photos. For us it was a mild introduction to an excellent assortment of trails through high wild country. We did find Grizzly scat on the trail.

It was about 1,400 feet of “up”. Our hike today had about the same, but it was four miles from the trail head to the peak and much higher elevation: we could feel that!

It is just a beautiful area . I’m so glad that there are places like that still around. The trip we made today was another beautiful one. We were able to drive to 6,000 feet and hiked up to 7,400 and saw no people and saw only old tracks in the snow.

Yes, He did a nice job on the clouds, as well as the rest of that country. There are several more lakes in that general area that I hope to visit too.

We didn’t try fishing, but I understand it is fishable. I might spend a night there later in the summer and if so I’ll take my fly rod.

We found it to be a very nice area and plan to return for a much longer trip. I brought back 70 photos of this one though and will post more later.
